hardest workout I've done in a long time

I just got back from a class done by a couple of tai boxers that was basically a 1.5 hr circuit training course involving kettle bells, heavy bags, kicking, punching, calisthenics, etc... Thing was you didn't stop, everything was timed. I thought I was in pretty good shape and I had ran 6.5 miles yesterday, but I had never been this close to the "puking, passing out factor" in a workout in a long, long time. I'm sure it would have scared me to see what my heart rate was. I have studied martial arts for a number of years - Chinese Hung Gar kung fu - but I work out alone and haven't pushed myself in a long time.

Funny thing about this class, only a few women were there. Men never show back up after taking this one time.... it is really an ego buster. I went with my friend's wife who is addicted to this style of workout. Luckily, I left my ego at the door and of course was shown up by the women there. I was proud of myself for a couple of things: 1. I didn't throw up. 2. And, because I will be turning 56 soon, I was particularly happy I didn't drop dead (would be kind of embarrassing in front of those women).

I will be going back..... I kind of like being around a bunch of women who are in that kick **** shape!

Sounds like Tabata type stuff. That is a killer workout and will break the best of 'em.

i am not sure what that kind of workout is, but i know there're some workouts that are designed for women and train certain muscles in their body that men are not typically stronger at. that's why women tend to perform much better in those classes.

I think this is based on the Tabata principle, but it requires a lot of upper body endurance. There was a young woman in the class, 25 years old, who was swinging a 55 lb. kettle bell up with 30 reps. Thing is she weighed about 120 lbs, so she was doing half her weight. One exercise had you squatting down and picking up a 60 lb. punching bag, throwing it over one shoulder and then slamming it down to the ground and then picking it up and throwing it over the other shoulder with 30 reps of that. To be honest, I couldn't finish most of the reps in a lot of exercises. It wasn't the weight, but the high intensity repetitions. After finishing about 20 minutes of going through the circuits of that kind of stuff, then you put on bag gloves and went through 3 minute rounds on 6 different heavy bags, and wall bags doing 10 pushups after each round before going to the next. Then you did a this thing of kicking the bags.... These weren't all young women either, my friend's wife is 44 and I think there was one woman pushing 50 in there.

At your age I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'm not far behind and my knees are GONE. I could NEVER run 6.5 miles on these knees even if I were in the best shape of my 'life'! Count your blessings. Arthritis is around the corner if not already here. As for me, it's ALL low impact and weights! Women have always had good endurance and seem to KNOW how to pace themselves better than most men?

I keep my running confine to trails now as asphalt and slanted roads play hell on my knees. I'm certainly not blistering with speed like when I was 25. Arthritis and bulging disks are with a lot of us over the age of 35. I view running as incomplete exercise and, with getting older, I'm a big believer in paying attention to upper body and core muscle strength along with flexibility. Its amazing how fast it goes when you stop paying attention to it.....

I've had knee issues ever since high school football :(

A lot of jumping in p90x, are you coming down as soft as you can? The more you land on your toes, the better work out you have and the less strain on your knees.

    Cody,
I know a lot of people with knee issues related to high school football that follows them into later life. Coming down on the balls of the feet is the best way to lessen the shock on the knees - in fact, that is the best way to run, by landing on the balls of your feet and not landing on your heels. I don't know a lot about the p90x workout, but I just looked it up and it looks pretty well rounded.

I take an hr Muy Thai cardio class 2x a week and its a great work out and also very non traditional and always keeps me guessing as to what will be next.....I love it and I definitely feel it has improved my cardio after only 2 months...This has helped me with my Running,TKD,Kickboxing and JiuJitsu

I see it all the time..new people coming to the class saying they run X amount of miles and how difficult they found the class. Totally different when you arent casually working out at your pace with little or no stress involved!
