Product Name: Wireless Surround F/X Rear Speaker
Manufacturer: Polk Audio
Review Date: February 03, 2010 04:50
First Impression: Pretty Cool
Specifications
Four 2.5" full range drivers
One 5.25" woofer
Powered by a compact multichannel channel DSP amplifier
Executive Overview
We've all heard of the new wireless surrounds. It seems that every company is coming out with some. The promise of wireless surrounds is, well, a lack of wires. What people may not understand (not you since we keep harping on it) is that you always need power. That requires at least one wire. The problem comes in when you have two or more rear speakers that you want to hang fairly high. You end up with the convenience of not having to run speaker wire across the room to your rear speakers but you still need to deal with unsightly wires.
While Polk Audio doesn't have all the answers to this problem, they do have an innovative partial solution. The Wireless Surround F/X builds on the SurroundBar technology Polk has be using for years, but puts it in the back of the room. SurroundBars simulate surround sound either by bouncing sound around a room or by using Digital Signal Processing (DSP). Polk's bar does the latter. DSPs use multiple drivers (generally) while adjusting the phase of the transducers to trick the listener's ear into thinking that the sound is coming from somewhere other than the speaker.
Now, obviously the Wireless Surround F/X bar is wireless. What really intrigued us was its form factor. A smallish half oval shape seems perfectly suited for table placement. Polk's "Polk Digital Logic" DSP is used to simulate the surround speakers for a 5.1 or 7.1 system. While this might seem to be a bit ambitious, remember that surround bars are usually trying to completely enclose the listener in sound. The Wireless Surround F/X only has to cover half that area which should be considerably easier.
The Wireless Surround F/X has four 2.5-inch "full range" (take that with a grain of salt) drivers and a 5.25" woofer. A small receiver connects to a transmitter that is connected to your receiver's surround channels. It is unclear if you will need RCA-style pre-outs for these channels (we're betting you will) or if you will be able to use your speaker terminals. There is a switch to indicate placement (and adjust the DSP) of the speaker - floor, table, or shelf. The Wireless Surround F/X is self powered (of course) by a multi-channel digital amplifier. Look for this one in stores in the second quarter of 2010.
Conclusion
We are very intrigued with the Polk Audio Wireless Surround F/X rear speaker. The trend in recent years has been more and more toward large open living spaces. Too often we take one look at those spaces and realize that we are either going to have to install small satellites on stands near a couch or in-ceiling speakers. Generally, these both seem like compromises to us. We say: If you are going to compromise, do it with the least amount of pain possible. The Wireless Surround F/X certainly is painless. We can't tell you how many living rooms we've seen set up with a TV on a wall, a couch in the middle of the room, and a table behind the couch. That table is just begging for one of these speakers. At $400, it's a healthy purchase but one we think many would be interested in. Polk looks to have a winner on its hands with this one.

Hello,
It is compatible with the LSi series. -
Polk People
Information Please:( -
I've never even heard of this thing...nor can I find it anywhere on Polk's website. Is this an older/discontinued product?
It sounds like this is some sort of thing that was meant for the "aesthetic conscious" people that don't want to have visible surround speakers or go to the trouble of running wires. Sort of the same type of thing as the surroundbars.
How were you planning on using this? You're already running LSiFX surrounds...and switching to this would most likely be a HUGE downgrade. I don't think this product was really meant to cater to the audiophile crowd. The nirvana inducer-

Hello,
It is compatible with the LSi series.
It's not timbre matched to the LSi series which I believe is clearly described in what you posted.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
Thanks for the reply.
I affirm by a dealer that is a new product in April 2010. (http://www.polkaudio.com/downloads/product-sheets/Wireless%20Surround.pdf)

"...Polk Breaks The Surround Barrier With Innovative Wireless Surround F/X®
-- Simple Wireless Component Goes Anywhere Behind The Listening Area, Providing Convincing Multichannel Sound From One Speaker --
LAS VEGAS, NV, January 4, 2010 Polk Audio®, the Speaker Specialists®, is preparing to ship a breakthrough audio solution that adds exciting surround sound capabilities to any home theater system, all from a single component with no speaker wires and extraordinary placement flexibility. The new Wireless Surround F/X re- defines what is possible in home theater; surround sound has finally become plug-and- play effortless.
Weve just made great sound as simple in the back of the room as it is the front of the room, said Mark Suskind, Polk Audios Vice President of Product Line Management. Too many movie lovers miss out on rear speakers because of the clutter and morass of wiring. The new Wireless Surround F/X utilizes our Polk Digital LogicTM technology to solve the problem with the convenience of wireless operation and simple placement on the floor, a table or a shelf. No drilling, no mounting, no wires -- just great surround sound in seconds.
The innovative Wireless Surround F/X is a single-footprint speaker system consisting of four 2.5 full range drivers and a 5.25 woofer, powered by a compact multichannel channel DSP amplifier. A small transceiver
included with the system connects the A/V receivers surround channels to the SurroundBar wirelessly. Thanks to Polks recently developed Controlled Dispersion Array (CDA) technology, the Wireless Surround F/X creates a convincing discrete left, right, rear and back surround stage that emanates from behind the listener. The system reproduces 5.1 and 7.1 surround program material, and features a 3-position DSP control that optimizes the image height for floor, table and shelf applications.
Polks new Wireless Surround F/X will be available in the second quarter of 2010 for a suggested retail price of $399.95." -

What are you asking?
If you can use it for 6.1/7.1? Yes, of course you can, it's a surround loudspeaker.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
Hmmmm, never seen these before either, they look pretty cool. As Mark said though, they are not timbre matched with the LSi series, but timbre matching isn't as important with surrounds as it is with the front three. As he also said, you can use them in the application they are intended for though, as surround speakers.

Not too sure where you got this product info as it doesn't seem to be on the Polk site yet however, should be a welcome addition for home owner that don't want to damage the home drilling through ceiling and walls or don't want their home to look like a cable runway
Cheers!

Very interesting  Doro, can you tell us when this will be available to the general public-clients? Can you provide full specs for those, particularly the PWSK 1? Any chances of demoying such? I bought and tested the Rocketfish 2.4 Ghz and it would be nice to do some comparision with the PWSK 1 however, would this one be simply mono (sub???) or is it stereo anyway??? That would surely give it some versatility (sub, center and surrounds hook-ups ). Bernal, thank you for briging those products to our attention. I am convince many will have some interest (lots of people don't have the mean to run cables when their home are completely finished from main floor to basement)
Cheers!

So...basically what you're saying...is that you want to use Polk's top of the line speakers all around...and then use this thing for the surround backs?
I'd get another pair of LSi's.

Hello,
Thanks for your reply.
In the future I will use for 7.1:
Surround speakers: LSiC vertically
Surround back speakers: LSif/x.

Keep in mind the LSiC is designed as a center channel and my not provide the best imaging for use as a surround speaker mounted vertically, IMHO.

You should be fine using LSiC's as surrounds. Is there any reason you'd prefer those over the LSi9's?

Thanks for your reply.
1 .- I like the style of LSiC
2 .- Technical equivalence LSiF / X.
3 .- LSi9 is excellent, but my ears prefer LSiC
4 .- If the LSi9 is used as surround speakers and center; Why I can not use the "LSiC" as surround speakers.

It's almost Dec, is this actually getting released? Thanks

I have some first thoughts and unboxing photos here: http://sphereboy.posterous.com/unboxing-of-polkaudio-fx-wireless-surround
So far it's pretty good but i need to continue my testing and tweaks. -
Just received and setup my F/X surround...sounds great while connected, but if the wireless connection is dropped the transmitter will not "rescan" when holding the scan button unless it is unplugged and reconnected (the button seems to freeze). There is no "on/off" switch...so this unplugging doesn't seem natural and is annoying.
Please advise?
Thanx.

I experience the same problem. I did notice that if i turn up the volume on the A/V receiver the f/x wireless receiver and loudspeaker re-sync automatically. Try that out and see if it works out for you. -

-
Agreed...Sphereboy's comments and experiences echo mine from the last three days.
I did turn up the A/V receiver volume...and yes, it did sync automatically. But the necessary volume level is not acceptable for "easy listening." So now what?
Your +/- list is also spot on:
Pros:
Easy installation.
When it's in sync and loud, it works great.
Cons:
Cheap feel of the wireless receiver.
Cheap speaker wire connectors. (wireless receiver)
Outdated power supply. (wireless receiver)
Big transformer block on loudspeaker power cable hard to hide.
**Not working well yet with low volume levels.**
**Disconnects between receiver and loudspeaker.**
**Strange digital sounds, and crackle pop sounds occasionally.**
No USB for any firmware updates. -
The biggest "deal killer" seems to be the "volume" issue, although my dog jumps at each unexpected "crackle/pop" sound.
Where do we go from here? -
Any fix out there for this "volume sensitivity level" problem?
Help!! -
I've come to the conclusion after 6 days that i will be returning the unit. It's just not very reliable and the digital noises it makes is unbearable. It's very distracting.
It's very unfortunate because it has the potential to be a great rear surround addition but i've come to realize that for $400 i can install some nice speakers, wired, and be done with it. And not have to deal with constant disconnects, loud crackle/pops, and alien sounding test patterns from left to right constantly.
My full experience is being tracked here:
