Anyone see this article on how trashy the Bose Acoustimass really is? Really informative. In the Buyers guide ( see link in article ) the author lists speakers which would make a better alternative to the Bose system. Polk is well represented.

My 7.1 setup consists of:
Denon 3803
Panasonic DVD
RTi70s front
CSi40 front center
RTi28s side surround
FXi30s back surround
PSW202 Subwoofer - Hey, it's my first sub!
RCA 46" 4:3 RPTV

I agree, Bose is lame, but appeals to the market segment its suppossed to. Perfect marketing I guess you could say.

My co-worker has a Bose AM-11/6(Dunno)? or something, 5.1, and he came over to hear my system, and left with his tail between his legs. :) Not really, he doesn't have a tail, but he is evil. Anyways, he was impressed, and appreciated the extension that a full range, REAL full range speaker could offer. No cube, will approach a bookshelf IMO. He is going to start shopping for speakers now, lol. Blow me Bose.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Not to mention bose makes one of the nastiest sounding cube designs. All edgy and scratchy and gritty. I've hear computer speakers sound better. It's interesting to note that the cutoff point of the AM radio is 10khz, and the F10 of the bose cubes is 13khz. Hmmm....

I really appreciate the link Jkratzer posted about Bose speakers. My boss worships Bose products, the worse part about that is he's trying to convince all of my fellow employees the same. So guess what, I have invited all of them, even the boss to come over to my house one day during lunch break to hear my H/T. Maybe after they hear mine they all will have second thought, no, the boss WILL have second thought. LOL...

Yeah, but Bose has all those cool features...so you have to sacrifice sound quality, big deal...

Yeah, I'm sure that would work....

    We've covered this turf before.

I will say, that in the case of the 901's, I don't think that they sound bad per se (and this is true of some of his other speakers) but they certainly aren't accurate and they are damn expensive for what you get...

:D Man, I just love this thread!

Here a quote I like concerning that the Bose "subwoofer" must respond to frequencies as high as 280 Hz:

"Translation: essentially when you're watching movies with a Bose system, you will hear the gunshots and explosions coming from the subwoofer next to the CD rack in the corner of the room, and NOT from the television screen."

One thing in the article that the guy guessed, but I bet is not true, is that Bose has repeatedly tried for THX certification and never made it. I doubt that... mostly because if Bose equipment *can't* pass muster, Bose *knows* that and wouldn't risk the embarrassment.

Sidenote, I wonder what you gain, if anything, from a THX certification. I have read articles asserting that the THX logo is nothing more than Lucas cashing in on his name and reputation. Maybe. But what really causes me to wonder is when you see THX certification on things like a computer speaker system, with tiny satellites and a single bass module with a 6" driver.

i think ur right, but some people like the way THX standards make equipment and speakers sound, some people dont, some people would want to pay more for the little THX sticker and some people dont really care, so i guess its all a matter of opinion. i dunno i personally wouldnt buy anything solely because it said THX on it, im sure there are uncertified speakers and equipment out there that sound as good or better then THX certified things. thats my 2 cents sorry if it doesnt mean much here.

one thing to remember is that bose used to have really nice sounding speakers, after all that is where the reputation started. I think it was the 901 back in like the early 70's, or was that mid 70's anyways they were one of the first to create such a large soundstage so dont be so hard on them, just dont be fooled into buying them...but since you're here you probably havent made that mistake

My friend at work has bose 901 from the 70's. These are pretty nice looking, all wood except a 3" gap in front for the front firing speaker. He takes quite a bit of pride in them and has tweaked them with equalizers and such. The result is that I like the sound. It is very open and full. You are probably right about the accuracy not being there, but overall they were nice to listen to.

Polk is well represented in that list.... but I find this comment interesting- "Polks are IMO overpriced and they are moving in the wrong direction as a company. They're newest speakers aren't much to talk about at all."

He used the wrong form of "Their" though.... :-)
