What Sub for me?

I've got 3.1tl's on the front with a 400 center and Boston Acoustic on the rear with a Denon 1802 for the receiver. I think I'm going to go ahead and change out to a Denon 3802. The bass is just not what I consider adequate for home theater. How much sub do you guys think I'll need to really hear/feel a measurable difference? Thanks

Those 3.1's need a real amp, not a receiver. The 3802 would be a good investment, but those speakers need some power that a receiver can't provide. Think along the lines of a 200W amp to power the 3.1's. Once you get an amp I think you'll find that the bass on the 3.1's is very good. If you would like to furhter augment them, you'll need to look at a nice sub, nothing less than a PSW650.

Actually I'm using a pair of Denon mono amps with the preouts on the receiver. I guess I should've added that earlier. 260 per channel I believe.SDS-400, SDA-1B, SVS 20-39pc+, B&K Ref 50, Denon 2900

Now that we have the amp issue cleared up, do you have your bass management set up properly in the receiver? Since you don't have a subwoofer, the front speakers should be set to LARGE and the subwoofer set to NONE or OFF in the receiver. That should redirect all LFE bass and bass from speakers set to SMALL to your 3.1's. If you've done that already and are not satisfied, then you need a subwoofer (which I would suggest anyway). Take a look at Polk's PSW650. Anything less and it won't be worth the trouble. The other subs I would look at would be Paradigm, Sunfire, SVS, and REL. Based on your system now I would guess you'll spend a minimum of $600 to get something that make a noticable improvement.
