B&K AV5000 amp addition

Just picked up a nice B&K AV5000 amp. Someone brought this amp to the local store to sell and they don’t deal in consignments so I picked it up. This amp is the model before the Series II issue. I was told the only difference between AV5000 and AV5000 Series II is, that Series II is 125W x 5 instead of 105W x 5.

Also, the amp has a 12V trigger and gold plated binding post. The front black aluminum plate entertains a pilot light and a power switch very plain and simple. The amp weight around 40 lbs. and came with original box, owner’s manual and is in pristine condition.

I bi-amped the F/R (Ch. 1+2) and F/L (Ch. 4+5) and Centre is connected to Ch. 3 as recommended by B&K and the surround is powered by Denon AVR3806 prepro.

Nice improvement to my rig. Just thought I will share this with you.

Strange that they actually spelled out "MINUS" and "PLUS", instead of just "-" and "+". I guess that's OH-KAY if you understand English.

And thanks for not posting pictures of the box.

The B&K amp works really well. My Rti8’s came alive with bi-amping. I found the 8’s were on a bright side with the Denon 3806 alone. After I hooked up the B&K they mellowed down and the midrange is a lot clearer. Also, the bass is more powerful and tighter.

After all hookups I played Diana Krall and I was amazed with her voice. Playing HT and music is more pronounced and smooth. Well worth the investment.

This amp is awesome. I just looked at your Sony on web site and it has preouts. I biamped my fronts and run the 5th chanel straight from the amp.

You would be really pleased with this amp.

Using UltraLink inteconnects and these work well for me for now. Yeh, the caps are awesome. I thought it was all about "Watts", but it really is all about "power supply" and quality of the amp. My Denon 3806 is rated at 120WPC x 7, but the B&K will kick its a$$ any time.

Sunday morning at 6:00 am I re-calibrated the whole setup using the mic that comes with my Denon. You might wonder why Sunday?..............Well, everyone on our street sleeps in on Sundays. Between 6:000 and 7:00 am there are no cars driving on the street or any kind of additional noise whatsoever. I found this is a good time to calibrate!

I'm sure your neighbors appreciate your 6am calibration session. With the test tones the HK 635 puts through my Omni s-12 sub, I think I'd be evicted from my apartment if I ran it at 6am.

It honestly scared the hell out of me when I first hooked up my sub and ran the EZEQ setup. Gave me chills. . .

Out of curiousity how does this B&K stack up to my Rotel (see Sig. below)
I know they are both good amps, being a fan of both I wonder what you guys think comparing these two models. The Rotel I believe has 110 x 5 and they are roughly from the same time period in audio history.

    Rotel RB985 MKII

They only list an 8 Ohm spec (100 WPC) but say 4 Ohm loads are OK.

I've got one using a Denon 3805 as pre/pro driving Polk 4 Ohm in walls. I finally diverted some money away from the two channel fund....

EDIT: No 12 volt trigger though, but four outlets on my power center are controlled by a 12 volt trigger so I don't have to walk up to it.

Not sure how I missed seeing te 985 info, but WTF...

B&K's power consumption at 1220 W, indicates it's the beefier choice, but the Rotel is likely around the 140 wpc into 4-ohm and in the low 20's for peak-to-peak current. More than respectable...
