Polk Monitor 5jr+
Hey there, new to the forum and thought I'd ask the experts here what your opinion is on these. I just committed on eBay to a very very clean pair that just underwent a thorough checkup on the crossovers. I am either going to be using these at my office at work or my office at home. I'll be powering them with either a custom TPA3116 integrated or 4wpc FU32 tube amplifier. They will be used as near field monitors on my desk and only operated at mid to lower volumes. Do these really reach down to 30hz? If that's the case, I may not even need a subwoofer. Lastly, I am interested in what mods can be done to these by an amateur like myself. Thanks for any info, opinions on these. I really look forward to receiving them!
Cheers,
Jared

Here are some pics. They were $160 shipped. Not sure if that is a great deal or not...

Looks like a nice clean pair.
The first thing, get rid of the SL2000 tweeters and replace with the RD0194-1 available only from Polk. After that, replace the caps with Sonicap and the resistors with Mills.Political Correctness'.........defined

Mine are close to fully modded all the way to new veneer. I have mine on Pangea stands, powered by 100W McCormack as an office rig. Not quite nearfield but close.
In my situation I would say they dig deeper than one might expect... but I prefer running the sub with them. Your room may be totally different.Polk Lsi9

Yea they go down to 30 but at only half of what they are at 80.
Get the better upgrade replacement tweeters F1 mentioned.
I would not need a sub and surely not if you are going to use a tube amp

It would seem I was not meant to get these. The eBay seller backed out because it could be a while before he could ship them so he sent the refund before I even knew what happened. So, anyone on the forum have a nice, possibly even modded pair they want to sell?

There certainly isn't a shortage of other options on eBay. There are a lot more than this.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

Ya, I saw those. Just figured I'd ask here first

Because of the good deals we typically give each other we have an unwritten rule of 100 posts being required to buy or sell as to avoid people signing up just to buy or sell something and then bail. Often times we even give away stuff for free, for the positive karma.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

Understandable. I have been a long time member over at Audiokarma and they have the same sort of generosity, selling awesome great at generous prices.

Wow, I did't catch my autocorrect this morning! I meant to say that they have the same camaraderie over there with selling great gear at low prices. -
Where are you located? There's a pair of the Monitor 5JR in State College, PA for $100. Don't know if they are different then the 5JR+, as I'm not too familiar with this model. No pics, so can't really tell...

Had a pair of these years ago (1992-94) while stationed in Turkey, ran them on a Soundcraftsmen 200+ watt amp. Lil bastads rocked. Sorry for the absence. I had the front axle on my 71 Jeep crack so now my audio funds have been temporarily been reassigned I hope to get with some of you that offered up a fine pair of these to go ahead with the purchase next month. Thanks!
Sorry to hear about your ankle cortico! -
The original post was for M5s and 5Jrs, picked up for a hundred. Now I did like the look of the beveled fronts and the covers were in good shape. With my M7s being from '78 w/ the outboard fuses and x-over themselves seem in need of a refresh job that's going out to Dave in the next few months. I recovered the grills from a bolt of fabric from P/E and was gifted 2 Polk logos from Steve which I did attach. Did Polk ever use real woods or veneers on the monitor sets ??

Strange that the PR has the silver trim and the midwoofer doesn't. I wonder if one or the other is not the correct one?afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

To me, Appear that the mid woofer is current production. I am say this because the surround rubber doesn't have the screw cut. Actually, I would recommend to the cut the rubber, so it doesn't deform as shown in the Leftwinger57's picture...

Anyone know what drivers are in here? I think its 6512? and tweeters are SL2000?
-
I just "liked" a post from 2015. Derp.

The schematics for the M5JR+ say MW6502. I didn't take any pictures when I opened mine so I can't verify.
-
Thanks of the info. Not sure where you found that schematic. I think the MW6502s are the ones with the baffle thing on the front of the cone aren't they? So what are the other ones?
And we are sure these are SL2000 tweeters?
Thanks,
-
Those are definitely SL2ks. The mw6xxx series drivers are visually identical. There's no way to verify the model without looking at the back.
