Marantz 2270 vs 2275 and Restoration

Wondering if anyone had any advice about which of these two might be "better."
I have a 2270 I recently got on eBay for a pretty decent price, especially when the seller kicked back a little money b/c of a couple of issues that weren't in the listing. Phono works--though one channel is softer than the other. FM works, but only in mono. FM light is out. Tape input works. Aux works with a CD. The power button's broken. All the other lights work.
I opened it up last night and it's pretty clean inside--no dust or rust. I didn't see any bulging capacitors. I was thinking about cleaning the pots, but they seem to be hidden by circuit boards. And, frankly, replacing one of the missing feet is about the extent of my electronic experience.
Still, it sounds great. My jaw dropped when I first put on a record and then a CD--Miles Davis' "Miles in the Sky" in both formats. I'd been using an older Onkyo receiver while my Luxman was in the shop. And I could probably live with the above flaws if the Phono input worked, at least for a while.
So, my first questions: Is it foolish to take the Marantz in just to get the FM section repaired and have the pots cleaned and power switch replaced? Or should I go the restoration route and have capacitors, etc., upgraded. If I do the latter, how much should I expect to pay for a full restoration?
While I was mulling this over, I saw a Marantz 2275 on craigslist. It would be more than I paid for the 2270, but if everything works, I was thinking I'd get it and sell the 2270 to defer some of the cost.
Thanks for any advice.

Well -- I offer one anecdotal piece of information. One of the local vacuum tube hifi gurus, who knows good sound, generally abhors the sonics of most solid state amplification (including modern hardware), but nonetheless opines that the 2270 is the best sounding ss receiver he knows of, full stop.
Strictly one person's opinion (not even my own opinion!)... but it seemed worth mentioning as you were trying to decide what to do with your 2270.
The danger with FM tuners in those days is that some parts (IC chips) may be essentially unobtanium -- unless a parts donor unit is available. I don't know if this is an issue with this particular receiver, though.
I guess that all in all I'd opine it was worth the effort and incremental expense of having the 2270 looked at. -
Normally the FM sections don't blow up, they just fall out of adjustment.
Also, sometimes cleaning the switches fixes that problem.
Any old 70's gear is going to need attention, even if it's working fine today.
A recapping becomes a must. This is like buying an old car, if you aren't handy

The 2270 and the 2230 fall into that Marantz legendary status. I run a 2265 and I am told the 2270 sounds better. I have not been able to get my ears on one to corroborate that but I can say that my 2265, which is MINT, sounds fabulous with old Polk Monitor speakers.
Let a tech take a look, if his estimate is reasonable go with it.
Not being able to lock a stereo signal in FM is a very very very common problem with ancient receivers. Sometimes the fix is simple, sometimes not.
2270? It's a KEEPER!
Enjoy!

Thanks for all the responses. Actually, I talked two techs. One says about $300; the other one says about twice that. @sucks2beme: I'm LOL, because when I got the second estimate, my first thought was, "Wish someone had told me only vintage equipment was going to do like owning a vintage sports car."
The other part of my question had to do with the chance to get a Marantz 2275. Any thoughts?

ive had my 2270 since 93..i haven't replaced the caps..i do need to replace a transistor that has some kind of temperature related function. the power switch went. i have the new but haven't gotten around to the surgery..you know why? it's still kicks arse! and it's only got the original parts once. i also run a 2220b. rated at 20 watts, more laughable than the 2270's 70 watt rating..enjoy
oh yeah! be carefule if you run sda's with the 2270. you'll be asking for some very low impedance which mine and lots of others did not like -

Not sure what sda's are. . . I'm using Polk Monitor 10s. I tried the Marantz 2270 with them, and they sounded great!

Polk had a line of loudspeakers with some sort of ambience recovery/"sonic holography" ;-) technology back in the '80s -- the technology, and the family of loudspeakers that bore it, was called SDA (Stereo Dimensional Array).

Thanks mrh.

de nada :-)
They're very popular with the vintage Polk fanboys, and they go for some serious Gelt... but (FWIW) I am not a big fan. They take a basic concept and stretch it too far for my taste.

Thanks, mrh. They Looks like my Monitor 10s on steroids.
Update: I bit the bullet and bought Marantz 2275. The seller was a nice guy and he came down a few dollars. Plugged it in last night and it sounded great. So I'm going to listen to it for a Few days while I decide how much I can afford to have done on the Marantz 2270.
I now have a serious case of hi-fi envy. The seller had a house full of gear, and I am now lusting after a pair of Klipschorns!

What is the cosmetic condition of the 2270 ? If its very clean i would spend the coin to have it fixed OR You could always sell it off & have new owner do it. Im not big into AM/FM & lots of people arent into vinyl. The pots on those are easy to clean & you might find a little Deoxit cleaning ALL of the buttons & knobs may fix a lot more of the problems you have stated above. If one of the buttons has bad contact it will throw every thing off. A good bath may fix alot of the issues. Just a thought..

Actually, that's close to the conclusion I've come to: Do some small repairs and clean the controls with my brother-in-law's help), then listen to it and figure out whether to keep it or sell it. Meanwhile, I'm just amazed at the way the Marantz 2275 sounds. I'm hearing new things in records I've owned for decades.

Boston1450: I just looked at this thread again and realized you'd asked for pictures. I've attached three, one of the Marantz 2270, one of the Marantz 2275, and one of one of my Polk Monitor 10s atop my home-made stand. (Apologies for the pictures--they were taken with my cell phone and aren't the best.) The stands are a modified version of ones I found plans for on this forum. Instead of cutting the interior supports at an angle so the speakers tilt back, I installed two carriage bolts at the front of the stands. I've used 1.5-inch and 2-inch bolts to increase and decrease the angle as I try to decide what sounds best.
The Marantz 2275 lives inside an old 1930s or 1940s record player cabinet my wife found years ago before we got married. The Marantz 2270 is on top of the cabinet for now.
And thanks for suggesting going the route of minor repairs. I ordered a new power switch and knob for the Marantz 2270, and bought a can of De-Oxit. My electrical engineer brother-in-law's installed the new power switch and knob, cleaned the controls, and did a rough-and-ready FM alignment.
A little TLC was all it needed! Listened to it for about three hours tonight, sometimes switching the turntable and speakers so I could listen to the 2275. I can't really distinguish between each receiver so, for now at least, I'm going to keep both!
Friday is LPs 10/$1 at my local Goodwill. Some of my latest haul beside the speaker. . .

Damn those are sweet. Im sure that would be a tough-decision. Not only are they beautiful,we know they sound good too. I would love to listen to the one that tube like Marantz on a pair of polks with peerless tweets or RDO's..
