For all that money, there has got to be better sounding new amps. Or, cheaper amps that sound as good, no?

I take it these amps are like buying a rare sports car? It's not that it drives better than new sports cars, but nothing quite rides like it?

You will be hard pressed to find a better amp, regardless of price. Those that have heard them will all say the same thing.

If 18 large won't buy them, it's possible they may not make reserve on eBay.

I love rare, vintage gear (and have some rare Carver gear). But, for that outlay, I'm getting something new and/or custom built.

    Bob would win, hands down.

IMHO these amps still rate in the upper echelon of amplifier design. They broke new ground in tube amp design and performance. They are "vintage" but hold their own even today among the world's best.

I'm a big fan of Dr. Bob and his designs, but..........

20K range. Delivered, setup, and voiced in your listening room by the designer. I ran his original design hybrids (Counterpoint) for years and loved them driving maggies.

As much as I appreciate Bob Carver's work...

Although, IF I had that kind of expendable funds, I'd probably buy them. Just to make sure they are well kept and appreciated. They are a piece of history...

From the owner over at carveraudio.com:

"Evidently, there seems to be some concern about the fact I was running the tube amps with no load (no speakers connected)
In fact, this IS a concern for the majority of tube amps. However, none of the Carver tube amps are affected by this.
The majority of tube amps WILL go into oscillation if there is no load placed on them. The Silver tube amps will NOT.
The circuit Bob designed is so stable, you can run these amps with an input signal... no load, and they will just sit there and purr away.
Where the majority of tube amps will start popping tubes like they are cheap light bulbs.

The other question I got was, Why is the right meter reading 0, as where the left bias meter is reading .2
The answer is, I took some of the photos before the output relay engaged on the right amp. The meters stay at 0 for about 4-5 minutes while the tubes are warming up.
The left amp was turned on before the right amp was. I saw a spot that needed dusting, and wound up turning on the right amp a few minutes later than the left.
Yes both meters work perfectly, and both read the same bias, around .2

I'll ask Bob to write up a little something on the circuitry and stability of the Silver amps, and post it here later."

Good point,, I have a pair of VTL mono's,, which I bias without any load connected,, the manual advises against this,, the service tech says, don't worry,,just do it,, I did,, no issues at all,,however I was taught that you never power up a tube amp without the load,, go figure. I suppose that Ted said it best,, they are a piece of history,, limited production,,IIRC Mr Carver said something like 50 pairs were built IIRC.

I would disagree. You want high power tubes? Carver is perfect and I'm sure the sound quality is excellent. But if I'm paying $20K for tubes for my horns, those amps would not be it.
