Never use an orbital sander for something like this. Hand sand only in the direction of the grain.4 -

It's to reduce the sound waves reaching the PR in order to reduce the bass output as they are bass heavy speakers already.2 -

I seem to recall the foam in my father's covered the entire space, but it's been so many years my memory could be off.2
