I looking to get a plasma to replace my Infocus projector and was looking at the Samsung 1080p 58" 550 series for $2899 and was wondering if this is a good set. I've never owned a plasma thats why I'm asking. The size has to be atleast a 58" or bigger in the $3000 range.

I checked out the Pioneers but for $5500 it's out of my budget. Any recommendations?

Thanks

Wonder what's the difference between the 550 and the 650 series plasma. I went to the store and they had both side by side and the picture seemed the same.

The colors was a lot better then my 650 & 850 series LCD .

So going from a projector to a plasma  I thought the whole point was to go big as possible. Why not upgrade to a new projector that will equal the plasma display at a much larger display size? With that budget I'd recommend the Panasonic 3000U. But if you insist on having a plasma, Pioneeer is about the best out there, followed closely by Panasonic/Samsung displays. My JVC throws a 126 inch image and it equals any plasma out there. Reconsider, especially if you have the room for it, or perhaps you're just tired of the big picture, it happens.

Lee if I were you, I would try to get this 60" 1080P Plasma from Pioneer PDP-6010FD.;)
It is last years model, but it can be had for around $3200 new and it is a killer set!
    Here is a review:

If not, stick with one of the 58" Panasonic models. Maybe the one that has the THX color mode.

Hope it all goes well for you.:)

Rule of thumb for plasmas in terms of performance and quality:
    Pioneer is #1
    Panasonic is close #2
    Everybody else is #3.

Samsung 650 series is great for the price, but IMHO, you'd get a better bang for your buck buying Panasonic.

is glare/reflection from the glass a problem for plasma's? every time I go into look at one to buy.. i am turned off by the reflections.. that's why I haven't taken the leap already. I've seriously put this off for 6 month's because of it.

With LCD's there is less glare.

    sorry to hijack your thread;)

Yes there is a glare, but not as much as the TV's we grew up watching (tube/CRT).

Pioneer is said to have the best anti-glare technology.

LCD has no glare except for a very select few models.

My Panny, has an anti glare and it works well. Mind you we have pot lights and the HT/tv room is located in the finished basement with the curtains closed all the time, it's a big a$$ window too....

No need to worry about any glare. The 18x14 basement section has no windows so sunlight will not be a problem.

Looking at some prices and the 50" samsung 550 is $1299 and the 58" is $2899. Big difference.

I have the 550 and love it. Other are correct in saying the Pioneer makes the best rated plasmas and I can't argue that. If it wasn't find the price, I'd have one instead of the Samsung. When purchasing, I also liked the Panasonics, but found the 550 for a better deal. I'm very pleased with the TV. Darks are dark and glare isn't an issue, even with big windows next to the TV. I'd say jump on one of the Samsungs and save the rest of the dough. I would only spend more if I could move into a Pioneer. Just MO.

i disagree. Panasonic did make some awesome stuff, but honestly the 550 and 650 series Samsung Plasmas are awesome TV's that rate higher than most Panasonic Plasmas.

it seems to me that Sony, Panasonic and Sumsung appear to have the best TV's right now. I have seen a few LG's that look ok, but not quite up to specs of the other three.

Pioneer Kuro and Pioneer Elite are really in a class by themselves. I only wish they made smaller TV's. 50" and above don't work for me. Supposedly there was or is a 42" Pioneer professional LCD out there somewhere. I did a search and came up with a few hits.. but no place seemed to carry them anymore.

Just be wary of in store comparisons -there are so many variables that a true side by side comparison can be suspect.

I was in CC the other week and was watching two identical LCDs (same brand and model number) from the same source HD source and one was exhibiting macroblocking and the other wasn't - and for the life of me I could not figure out why.

Some sets can be set on 'torch mode' while others are not which does not make for a valid side by side comparison.

You should do as much research from what you consider credible sources, look for yourself and then decide - and then poo poo everyone else :D

I know this is a plasma thread, but i personally prefer LCD's. The LCD's that are out now are pretty much up to par with plasma in my opinion. If i was going to get a plasma though, it would have to be the Pioneer Kuro, that's the only one worth it in my opinion.
As far as LCD Brands, Samsung is doing it the best right now. I have had multiple LCD's from different brands in the past couple years, and my Samsung 52" 650 is by far the clear winner for me, the newer Samsungs that came out not that long after the 650 are nice as well. But again, this is all my opinion, everyone sees things differently, so it's all very subjective.

Yep, about as subjective as you preferring your LCD over a plasma. INMO, LCD's are about 3-4 years behind being close to plasma. About the only LCD that comes close is the Samsung 950 series, but that uses LED's unlike the average LCD. The 55" 950 LCD is also priced over 4k. Thats still not mentioning, better black level performance, better off axis viewing and no motion issues that are a plasma strong point in comparison.

IMHO the few LCD TVs that approach plasma quality (top of the line Samsung, Sony XBR) are overpriced...and they still don't better the plasmas. Of the plasma TVs, I agree that Pioneer is the best (esp the elite!). I own a Panasonic, which I consider the 2nd best brand and the best value in larger TVs. Most of my friends have 1080P LCDs and are shocked at how good the PQ is on my 3 year old 50" Panny plasma. They're shocked to learn it's not 1080P. Just goes to show you there's more than resolution...and also that viewing distance is what mandates the efficacy of 1080p

Well luckily i have the right to prefer one thing over another. I prefer the brightness of LCD. The black levels on the new LCD's are very good. Motion blur is not as big of an issue as it once was, but of course, some people are more sensative to it, luckily for me i'm not. I'll admit the off axis viewing is better on a plasma, but that doesn't concern me since i don't watch tv off axis, i prefer to be in front of my tv. Also, the samsungs with the glossy screens really help to give extra pop to the picture, i'm not a fan of the matte screens on some LCD's though, but i also don't have to worry about glare. Another thing is i'm a gamer, and i prefer gaming on an LCD screen, less to worry about. All though i do know that plasma burn in is not quite the issue it once was.

Just to clarify, i'm not stating one is better then the other, and plasma definetly has it's advantages, but that gap is closing quickly. And yeah, me prefering LCD's is definetly subjective lol. I do love those Pioneer Kuro's though, and if i was to get a plasma i'd be all over that set, they are beautiful.

    I'm not a plasma basher lol. :p
In fact, i'm going to be looking for a new tv for our bedroom during the summer, and even though i prefer LCD, i'll be considering the Kuro because it's so beautiful, and then just throw my Samsung 650 in the bedroom and use the kuro in our living room. I'm just waiting to see the next line of LCD's that come out this year and what they have to offer.

Good luck choosing leroy, just do a lot of research, and look at the ones you like as many times as you can before you buy. It's a fun experience, and there is nothing like pulling a new tv out of it's box (except for new speakers that is lol)! :D

To me the Samsungs look better than the other sets I've seen, both the plasma and LCD's. I ended up going with their LCD 52" version because it fit well, had a great price and I thought the picture was awesome.

All the other recommendations are probably fine but you mentioned that 58" or larger is required as is the $3000 price range. The Samsung is pretty much it without **** around with RP/DLP. Fortunately the Samsung is getting excellent reviews. Is the newer Kuro Pro-111FD better? Probably. Is it $3000? Yes it's $3400 on Amazon. Is it 58"? Nope, only 50". For $200 more you could go with the older PDP-6020 and that's 60". Damn all these nasty trade-offs.

I think you're on the right track with the Samsung. Right now given your parameters the Samsung & the Kuro PDP-6020 may be the only choices. I don't think you could make a mistake with either one.

I think what he meant was no current Pioneer models have been released yet with the Panny screens. That will be in the near future.
