question about Onkyo's recommendations on upconversion and upscaling

I might not be getting the correct meaning from this, but I recently purchased an Onkyo TX-SR806, and in the manual there are several reverences to THX's recommendation that you not have the receiver upconvert signals (like s-video or component to hdmi), and that you set the output resolution to "through"- which means no upscaling.

I guess now that I typed it out I realize it's THX's recommendation and not Onkyo, but it seems strange that they would mention this at several places in the manual when one of the main features of the 806 they tout is "HDMI 1080p upscaling powered by Faroujda DCDi Cinema". Does that seem strange to anyone else, or is there something I'm missing here

I think it might be a requirement to be THX certified, possibly to keep the video in the intended format, only a guess.

I have the same vidio processor in my Denon but use it as pass thru.

I do not think it is anything to be concerned about. At one time Faroujda wass the standard but since been out classed by others. Either way it is not important to me.

oh yeah- I am using some upconversion although no upscaling at the moment. I know there shouldn't be any problem with doing it, just thought it was strange that they put in those recommendations when they use the chip as a selling point, haha. Kind of weird...

Never thought about the THX certification stuff though, that might be why.

That THX recomendation is simply to maintain a standard that they define for home theater. In other words, if you upconvert a signal from a vcr the resulting picture quality is not up to THX standards and therefore not recomended. Onkyo is who is using the chip as a selling point not THX. If you are happy with the result who cares what THX thinks or wants. Nice receiver by the way.

I love my 806 and haven't had any need to upconvert an analog signal yet because all of my components are hooked up via HDMI. Like it has been stated it's probably just THX saying if you upconvert an analog signal it won't be up to thier standards anymore. As long as you are happy, go with it, lol.
