Running a bootlegged Windows was a PITA back in the day, can't imagine it has gotten any better. The only way I run Windows on my home machines is if I can get a student version (my wife is still in school). Good luck with the project if you decide to do it. It won't be cheap any way you look at it and it will take time to get it right, but that's part of the fun. If you want something that's cheaper and much easier to set up, and will do most of the tasks you're looking for (if not all), just get a PS3. Plug in NAT drive or use a PC as a media server to get the drive space.
I have a kid who takes up most of my time so I rather just use the media player than configure it so no more HTPC's for me. Although I am in process of converting from Win "server" running TVersity into Linux server running fuppes so it's not like I have abandoned the tweaking and configuring part altogether. -
IMO, it's more of a pain to run a bootlegged copy now than ever."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche
