Question on plasma burn-in

I read that it need about 100 hours of viewing then burn in isn't as much of a factor.

I watch SD in stretch mode, and ok with that. I wanted to know if I watch blu-rays or dvds in letterbox will that cause burn in? If so how long is safe? Would I be able to complete a 2 hour movie, and be ok?
Setup:

2 Channel: Vienna Acoustics Mozart Grand, T+A P 1230R, Primare SPA21, Oppo BDP-105
PC: Vienna Acoustics Haydn Grand, Cambridge Azure 650A v2 , Peachtree iDAC, Denon DVD-3800BDCI

You'll be fine getting through a movie, you just need to vary what you watch. If you're paranoid, just stretch it out for a couple minutes every now and then during the movie.

Exercise caution no matter how many hours are on it.

I have read that it's not much of a factor with the newer plasmas. My Pioneer Kuro 6020 has an 'orbiter' feature to protect it from burn in.

Newer Plasma's last 2 or 3 years are not as likely to have burn in but you should either have it ISF calibrated or search CNET or AVSforum for settings.

Once contrast and brightness have been set correctly from factory torch mode you will be fine no matter what.

Just found this on cnet, it is for the 42" version of your TV but settings should be the same.

Owner o a panny plasma and I have played many hours straight of PS3 and nothing we have had moviethons of 3-4 movies some with the "black bars" and nothing. There are some products out there which can help with screen washes, of which I use one every once in a while.

Sorry, just to add our plasma is just 1yr old.

I've had my Panasonic 42" Plasma for several years now, and my personal experience is that burn-in is no longer an issue. A few times I've left my XBox 360 paused on the same screen overnight a few times, and there was some slight image retention the next day that lasted a few minutes then went away.

I suppose if you left your TV on 24/7 and always watched SD channels then the black side bars might be an issue. But practically speaking, with normal watching and shutting the TV off every day, it's just not an issue on any plasma's of recent years.

Another anecdotal story on my panasonic 42" plasma (bought in 2005). I actually was drunk one night watching a movie on television and paused the damn thing then went and passed out without turning the TV off... a good 8+ hours later I discovered my TV with the DVR pause bar, letterbox bars, etc and thought i had torched my plasma. It had a little DVR-pause bar ghosting for a few days, but it went away.

So i would definitely say you are fine watching movies, since i dont lots of that. And i even play a far amount of video games on the same TV and never had an issue... Hopefully this helps

Thanks for the information guys. I didn't want to have zoom in the letterbox for movies. I'm really liking the tv so far happy with the decision.

Do your self a favor if you have not adjusted factory settings and tweak it to the setting at CNET, you will be surprised how much better it will look.

My Pioneer was on the wall at Best Buy for who knows how long, and subjected to who knows what as far as the source material. It still looks great, and I haven't had any issues watching movies, playing wii, watching tv, etc.....

You shouldn't have any problems with yours.

I wouldn't worry about burn-in. I've had the plasma on all day without any issues (with sidebars). My buddies older Samsung is bad with burn-in. You watch a movie (and video games) and he has major burn-in.

Be sure you don't confuse burn in with ghosting

I've never heard of a plasma having ghosting problems, always thought that was an issue with LCD's? The reason they came out with 120hz.

When I watch a show with a Channel logo, when I turn the TV off it's still there for a bit. That is not burn in...maybe ghosting is not right....I think it is.

That scenario sounds like burn-in to me, not ghosting. I've always thought ghosting was when you are watching some fast moving/action flick and the object associated looks like it's trailing.

I know what you are talking about, and I seem to remember it being image retention. "Ghosting" would also be a fair term for it.

It isn't full burn in, but some images, like the ticker or channel logo, will leave a small "outline" of the image. Not all plasmas do this, and I haven't seen a Panasonic or Pioneer do it for quite some time. I've noticed it on a few Sanyo and NEC plasmas that have been installed in the past.

It's as mentioned here: image retention, the reason I called it ghosting is that it's barely there you can see it but can see through it kinda like a ghost. But the term is Image retention.

So all that to say just know the difference between Burn in and Image retention.

I've only seen the slightest IMAGE RETENTION:D when my wife had a show paused for like 2 hours. It went away FAST!! I was actually all freaked out at first. So again, I wouldn't worry about burn in on your Panasonic...

One of my friends has a plasma with "pixel shifting". It's jumps the image back and forth a single pixel and it keeps images from burning. He says since it's such a small shift, you can't even notice it, but I haven't seen it with my own eyes. They have had the TV a little over a year.

The best way to check for screen burn in is to put a test disk on like Avia with the white picture.
