I am looking to purchase two flat panel televisions.
One about 22" for my sons bedroom and one for my livingroom about 35 to 40"
I know very little about the new sets so could really use some help. I am thinking about a 22'' Vizo for my sons room for $300. For the livingroom I guess a set in the 35 to 40'' range. Like I said I have very little knowledge about flat panel/lcd tv's. Thanks in advance for your help.

Vizio is a great bang for the $, and is also made in America. If I were you, get something larger for the living room, trust me. You will wish you did. I had a 37" (too small) and then a 42" (too small) and now a 50" and am totally pleased. No need to ever get one bigger for my small living room. You must realize that a 40" HDTV looks a lot smaller the a 40" regular TV because the screen is measure diagonally and the HDTV has a long rectangle screen and a Standard TV has more of a square screen. Hope that makes sense. You can get a huge TV for a low price if you really do your homework and search the net.

I second the endorsement of Vizio. I have a 32" version ca. $600 from Sam's Club which I like a lot. The tube or lamp or whatever it is has a half life of 50,000 hours (point at which brightness is lessened by half) compared to 60K for more expensive sets, and the resolution is 720p. But the picture seems great and it cost about half of what the other sets I was considering cost.

You can get a really nice 42"-50" plasma for less than $1000 these days at some of the big box stores. I would definitely go bigger. At least you'll take care of the "should I have gone bigger route".58" Samsung Plasma (on wall)(calibrated)
LSi15's front (modded xo's)
LSic center
LSiFX's sides
LSi7's rears
Sunfire Sig. 600 amp for 15's
Sunfire Sig. Cinema for C,S&R
Sony ES 3000 pre/pro
SVS 2039 PC Plus sub 12.3 (16hz tune)
PS3
Wii
Signal and Audioquest ic's
12 awg monster speaker-cable (bi-wired)
Belkin PF60 power conditioner
Monster power conditioner for sub -
An interesting note about Vizio......I read that they basically go to the other manufacturers and ask for parts and then end up making their sets from those spare parts of others. In and of itself that's fine.......but you can end up with a vast difference in QC from one run to the next since there's no consistent supply of parts that are specifically made for them.......comment comment comment comment. bitchy.

When picking out a flat panel I would suggest you (for your living room) get a newer model with the 120hz refresh rate. The older models have a 60hz refresh rate and that amounts to motion artifacts during scenes in a movie where there is alot going on at a fast pace on the screen. What this means is that your screen will refresh 120 times a second and you will get significantly better picture quality. For your sons the 60hz will do and you can get those LCD sets pretty cheap. Plasmas still have a slight advantage in overall picture quality but over the last few years LCD has caught up. I have been researching LCDs for about a month now since I am going to get one in February. Spent hours and hours reading and checking them out at Sams club,Costco,BJs,Best buy,Circuit City, etc. I have a personal favorite from all the reviews and from a couple of movies I have watched on it. A friend fo mine has one and it just kicks ****. Kinda on the expensive side but then again I willnot be buying another tv for like 5 years (unless oled sizes and prices come within reason).
Here are a few links for you to check out.

Basically its how they class they TV models with each model adding more features, better contrast etc. The XBR is the supposed mothership of their screens followed closely by the Z series which incorporates the 120hz frame rate. I'm sure there are more details but that about sums it up.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!
