Help with dvd

Ok, I just got a new Onkio DVD PLayer. Not only was I looking foward to the amazing clearity of the DVDs, but most of all I was looking foward to puting the 5.1 option on my reciever to the test. I hooked up everything the the guy at the store told me to. I was told to put a monster cable into the digital input of the DVD player. This did not work. I then looked in the instuction manual of both my reviever and dvd player and the dvd player mentioned nothing about 5.1. I this because the band that i bought was just bad and the guy at the store sold me a product that is not 5.1 compatible or is there another way to hook up 5.1. Please help me. Thank you.

    Is your receiver a AC-3. In order to get 5.1 you must have a receiver or a DVD with the AC3 decoder. Got a digital output on the DVD and a digital input on the Receiver? What type?
