Sub is whining

I woke up yesterday to a very strange sound, akin to a smoke alarm, but not quite as shrill. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from at first, but to make a long story short, I realized that my sub-woofer was making the noise.
The high pitched whine didn't seem to be coming from the speaker. But it was also making a white noise static sound that was coming directly out of the speaker. There was no signal going into the sub. I unplugged the power chord, and the sounds stopped. I waited a while, plugged it in again, and the sound started up. The white noise started immediately, and it took maybe 30 seconds or so for the whine sound to gear up. I should add that when I turned the receiver on and put on music, the sub didn't produce any bass; it just kept on whining. But my other sub worked fine.
FYI - it's a six yr. old Paradigm PDR-10. It had been in storage for about 10 months before I starting using it again (as a second sub) about two weeks ago.
Could this be the amplifier itself? Or some other electronic component that would make this sound? I'm wondering if it might be worth fixing, rather than put out the $ for another low to mid level sub.
I appreciate any ideas.

Most assuredly, something is wrong with the amp/power supply in the sub. Not sure if that's a class A/B amp, a BASH amp, or some other variety. If its an A/B amp, the fix might not be that expensive from a shop. If its a BASH amp, the parts are proprietary and might be expensive.

Also, I would not plug it back in. If you do, the "magic smoke" might just present itself to you.
Have you contacted Paradigm?~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~ -
