PS3 cable question

Hello

I'm in the process of moving over to the main farm house from our trailer and amd switching over to HDMI on the ps3. It used to hooked up via component on our old Sony and I don't have that cable anymore. Of course when I hook up the HDMI there isn't any signal outputting on that cable.

If you hold in the power button to reset the ps3 does it see that I have the HDMI cable hooked up and start outputting on the cable?

I tried that but it didn't act like it reset, just turned on.....

    Go into the menu settings from the cross media bar. You will find options to specify exactly what hook-ups you are using for audio and video. You can also specify things like maximum resolutions and whether to use bitstreaming or PCM for audio. More advanced settings are available like color settings, black level settings, what movie cadence to choose, etc. if you want even more control.

    cheddar, I don't think he is seeing any menus as he's not getting a picture.

    Lorthos, is your TV saying anything about "Not supported mode" or just saying no input signal? I have my PS3 shared for a projector and TV, and I have to switch settings whenever I go from the projector (1080p24 output) to the TV (1080i60 output).

    Are you missing the component adapter that came with the PS3?

    Are you plugging the HDMI directly into your HDTV? or are you plugging the Sony PS3 via HDMI into a reciever with HDMI?

    If you are plugging the PS3 it into a reciever and the reciever is than connected to an HDTV via component you would need to setup the reciever to 'convert digital to analog'. Many recievers do the opposite 'analog to digital' but not the reverse (most Denons I think). I did not get a signal on my Xbox 360 until I went all HDMI.

    Give a bit more info about your setup including your TV and reciver/preamp.

    Good luck ... it is frustrating I know.

    If getting a cable to go back to the old set-up and switch the menus is the problem, then find a friend with a ps2. I believe the cables are interchangeable and there should be a lot of ps2s out there...

    Okay, I did find a component cable and got into the menu but when you select hdmi the screen goes blank and of course theres no way to save that setting and it reverts back to the component out setting.....

    Its hooked directly into a Panasonic Plasma.....

    Can't you plug both cables in and just use the input that works either way?

    Are you doing this (not on my PS3 so menu names might not be correct):

    Settings -> Display -> Select resolution

    Start with 720p or 480p, as I'm sure your plasma accepts these. If your plasma is 1080p then try 1080p once 720p has cleared, otherwise just leave it to 720p.

    Then you select HDMI.

    I will have to look at my PS3 once I get home but make sure the resolution you have set is compatible with your TV.

    Hmmm...it shouldn't be this complicated.

    I "borrow" my kids PS3 when I want to watch blu-ray movies.

    Their gaming setup uses a standard SD CRT TV hooked up via composite.

    Whenenver I "borrow" the PS3 I hook it up via HDMI to my AVR.

    When I power it on, it detects the HDMI handshake and resolution and on my HDTV I see the prompt saying that an HDMI connection was detected and do I want to continue.

    Clicking yes sets the PS3 for HDMI.

    Now, when I move the PS3 back to the kids TV - and hook up the composite video connection, the screen does stay dark and there is no signal.

    However, I've learned that to 'restore' the composite output default, you turn the PS3 off, then turn it back on while AT THE SAME TIME holding onto the on/off pad-button for 5-10 seconds.

    This restores the picture back to composite and the picture to the SD TV.

    Maybe you should do the default restore with nothing connected, then turn the unit off, hook up the HDMI cable from the PS3 to your HDTV and turn on the PS3(without holding the on/off pad-button) - it should detect the handshake and give you a display on your HDTV to keep this setting.....it should....

    H9: If you don't trust what you are hearing, then maybe you need to be less invested in a hobby which all the pleasure comes from listening to music.

    It's a shame that setups are so complicated these days!

    Gone are the days where you just connected stuff together and it worked! :(
