Does anyone else have this unit? I picked one up on Thursday (woo!) but I'm having a slight problem. I can't seem to get anything to output over HDMI. I have the video converting turned on, I followed the manual to the letter. It's supposed to be able to output all video over HDMI to my tv. It works using component cables, which isn't a huge problem, but I'd like to know if it's something I should be worried about. I currently don't have any HDMI devices, but I plan on adding a BD player in the near future. Should I return it and see if a new unit has the same problem (maybe it's a bad port)? Is there something I'm missing? Any thoughts from the brain trust would be appreciated.
Aside from this, I'm really loving this unit and my new RTi A5's I purchased with it!!!

i don't think if you use say.. component cables from your DVD player to your receiver.. then output it to HDMI.. I don't think that will work. The signal has to stay digital the whole way for it to work.. I think that's correct anyway.
So HDMI into your receiver... and HDMI output of your receiver. you can't input HDMI and output component or vice versa that I know of. If it's possible.. i'm not familiar with it then. good luck.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I'm looking at page 19 of the 663 manual---the diagram seems clearly to suggest component video input can be output via hdmi. OTOH, one of the notes to the diagram asserts that analog video signals with 1080p of resolution are output only at component video monitor out jacks.
I shall leave it to techies to figure out what this means --- really just wanted to say that I have a 663 and until recently my dvd player was connected via hdmi, and there was never a problem, I never "set" anything. So I think danger boy is on to something; hdmi connection will very likely resolve these problems.
ps if it matters, I recently connected the DVD player directly to the tv, which improved the picture noticeably and of course degraded the sound.
pps ah, brain beginning to work slowly. Perhaps, croutons, you have a 1080p hdtv and are attempting to output 1080p signals? And the 663 won't go beyond 1080i? -
Audio Video receivers today are complicated beasts... the menu on some of them can be hard to decipher. Each input usually requires the owner to set the correct video source and audio source in the menu. It can get pretty complicated.. and it's best to write it all down once you are finished assigning the audio and video signals.
And once you're done with that.. you've only scratched the surface on settings.. then you'll have to configure all your speakers.. distance, size, crossover, filters, delays, etc....
Once everything is dialed in though.. it should sound pretty sweet.

The 663 should convert component to HDMI. I have the RX-V1800. I have my CDR-HD1500 cd player connected by s-video, and it outputs the CD player's menu and setup screens fine over HDMI to my TV.
So it will convert component, composite, and s-video to HDMI. It will not convert HDMI to component, composite, or s-video.
Are you even able to get the 663's setup and menu screens on your TV through HDMI? If not, you definitely have a faulty unit, take it back. -

No, my tv is only 1080i. And I can't really tell a difference in picture quality by running everything through the receiver (I have an el cheapo tv).

Well, I have gotten the menu to appear over HDMI, but it seems to take about 10-15 seconds before the menu shows up (is this normal?), and sometimes it doesn't even work. But it seems weird to me that it would work occasionally, so I don't know if it's the output, or maybe I have a bad cable. About half the time my tv just shows no signal detected. I'm just trying to make sure there isn't an output setting that I've overlooked somewhere to tell the receiver to use HDMI (aside from the video conversion option, which I have turned on).
Output over component works perfectly, and converts video and s-video.

croutons, I have a 663 and although it's new to me as well maybe I can help a little.
The delay in displaying the OS menu is normal. But I do think it can only be displayed on the HDMI out.
As far as what can be output over HDMI:
(19 manual, 23 pdf) You can transcode every possible input except 1080p component (xbox360) to hdmi. You cannot convert hdmi to anything else. This is not a receiver thing, it's an hdmi rule.
What source are you having problems with? Try this: When you have the source running that you are having problems with call up the
OS menu, then select the "Signal Info" and this will give you a clue what's going on in the 663. The one thing that might be going on is if you are using a "Scene" button to select your source the default for that scene setting may be overriding your "video conversion on" setting in which case the output would be on the corresponding/same out format as the input. I'm not sure if a "Scene" setting will override your settings in this way or not, just a thought. -

Don't know if 15 seconds is normal or not for the 663. The 1800 takes about 2 seconds, and HDMI switching seems instant. With my old PR-SC885, bringing up the menu would take about 10 seconds, HDMI switching took just as long, so I think this varies alot from different models.
If you have the HDMI inputs mapped correctly, and get no signal half the time, I would really suspect a bad reciever or cable. -
What hdmi cable are you using?
Is/has the hdmi cable stretched, bent, or been put under any other stress?
What TV are you using?
How old is the TV?
Which exact components are you trying to up-convert.
It is very common to have an issue with hdmi, especially if the the above conditions are not met perfectly. It sounds like there might be an issue with the handshake between the receiver and the display, but knowing the above information will help narrow it down.

All of them. The 663 is supposed to output everything over HDMI, all I get is a "no signal" on my tv, or occasionally a setup menu. How long does your 663 take to show picture when you switch to HDMI?

I don't know what HDMI cable it is honestly. I got it from a friend. It worked the last time he used it though. It just sat in his cable drawer for a few months before I swiped it.
Here's my setup:
TV- Westinghouse SK-32H240S 32" LCD TV
Xbox, PS2, Dreamcast, hooked up through composite to the receiver. Also have a Wii going through component.
I can output everything over component without a problem. I'm ordering a new HDMI cable just to rule that out. Any other suggestions? In the manual I seem to remember it saying that an error message would display on the receiver if there was a handshake problem, but I have not gotten any such notification.

I have an RX-V863, which is very similiar to your 663. I have not tried to convert from component to HDMI. I run HDMI from my DVD into my 863 and then HDMI into my TV. It all works well; both sound and picture are great.
I route the component out from my cable box directly into the TV, so I don't have to turn on the receiver just to watch TV. I run the optical out from the cable box into my 863 when I want to listen to the surround sound from the cable TV broadcasts - which sounds great. My DVD player sends the video, and CD, SACD and DVD-A audio signals through HDMI into the 863, (and then HDMI into TV), and it all looks and sounds terrific.
I never have any problem seeing the 863 menu. 15 seconds seems awfully long for your 663 menu to appear. I timed it, and it takes about 5 seconds for the 863 setup menu to appear on my TV.Speakers:
. 5.2 surround config:
. . . In-wall L & R Fronts and Center: Polk LC265i, LCi-RTS-C. In-ceiling L & R rears: Polk LC80i
. . . Floor Subs: Polk DSWPro 500, Paradigm PDR-10
. Zone B: very old pair of Polk M 5's
. In Storage but still favored: Paradigm Monitors
AVR:
. Yamaha RX-V863
Universal DVD:
. Oppo DV-980H
TV:
. Sony Bravia XBR LCD 40" 720P (2005 vintage)
. Comcast Cable, Motorola box -

I'm on my way to work right now so I will do some rough timing tests tomorrow. One other thought I had was on the LCD, I see that the Westinghouse has 2 HDMI inputs. Have you tried the second one? Also are the inputs on the TV assignable? Could the inputs be mislabeled so you end up selecting the wrong HDMI input connector? Just a thought, I'll get back with the timing results. -
croutons I had a chance to do a couple quick tests. It takes about 4-5 seconds to have vid. on my display after switching the receiver from a composite source (old RCA dish receiver) to a HDMI source (Toshiba DVD player). It takes about the same 4-5 sec. to call up the OS display. And to switch back to the source vid. from the OS display, maybe a little (< 1 sec.) longer.
Any chance you could get your hands on some source that has an HDMI out you could plug directly into your TV to verify that the input function on the TV is working? If you can,..... and it does, ......and you have the video converting turned on in the receiver menu, then I would think the receiver has a problem.
After you try this post your results and maybe someone else would have another idea, but that's all I can think of.
Good Luck -

Hey thanks for the info. I'm asking around to see if anyone has a dvd player with HDMI I can borrow to do this test. Or maybe I should just buy my own, I hear they're pretty cheap nowdays (my DVD player is 10 years old anyway). We'll see how that goes.
