It arrives Friday. Bought it from the same place I bought my last two PJ's, projectorpeople.com. They finally offered a good promo with it. It came with a $100 off pp.com coupon, a $300 Epson rebate and a free spare bulb. With this PJ I will now be able to take full advantage of everything Blu-ray has to offer.

I'm awaiting your review brother. Proj. people are a great bunch to work with. They were able to get my mounting hardware to me in less than a week out here in Japan. The Epson is a nice unit, very nice size too and throws a very nice pic. Though I dont have one, I do have it's big bro in the competition. Congrats again.

What PJ is that Sherardp? And yes, PP is a great company, I've dealt with them over the last 5 or so years with all my PJ purchases, very impressed with their CS.

Going from a Z3 with a contrast ratio of 2000:1 and 800 lumens to this 1080 UB with a 50,000:1 contrast ratio and 1600 lumens, it should be quite impressive, I'm super excited. Oh, plus going from 720p to 1080p....

This is the JVC HD1. For what you spent you'll get a very very close pic to what the JVC does. Though the black level from the HD1 is said to be better. Had I not been in a rush I would have saved myself about 2k and went with the Epson UB as you have. I spent almost 5K for this thing (tad bit pricey indeed). However the UB at its price point is a no brainer and youre still getting a stellar performer. What size screen are you pairing the UB with? I paired up with a Carada 126" and the quality/pic of Carada is outstanding.

Ron, that's a great projector. Congrats!

    On another note...
Anybody here experiencing lamp dimming on the 1080UB (or JVC HD1) after a few hundred hours?

ALL lamp based projectors will have a serious drop in light output during the first few hundred hours. It's the nature of the beast. Lamp outputs will probably drop by 30-40% and remain stable from there. That's why you should not have it ISF calibrated until the lamp settles down, otherwise you will have to have it recalibrated.

I have a JVC RS1 with a 108" diagonal 1.3 reflective Stewart screen. The JVC is a light cannon... even with 500 hours on the bulb, the image is very bright... bright enough where I have placed a neutral density filter to cut down light output. This projector has a native contrast ratio of 15000:1. I do not like projectors with dynamic irises to adjust contrast ratios. For one, the motorized iris's function is visible on screen when it's in action. Second, when watching dark scenes like in outer space, it dims the overall image where the starfield goes dim.

The only issue I have with the JVCs is that they are not accurate colorwise (but then agian, most projectors are not). The new JVCs shown at CEDIA is supposed to have a color management system builtin where you can correct the color issues.

After the dimming of the bulb, the Epson 1080UB in calibrated modes looks much like a CRT projector with regards to brightness. I have mine placed the furthest away from the screen in low lamp mode, Theater Black 1, and it puts out around 300 lumens. That's a a little less than 460 - what most reviewers got with a new bulb.

I'm playing mine everyday, putting those hours on it. My pic is very bright and as jon S noted the JVC is very bright. I'm considering a ND filter myself. The picture is very good on both projectors though as I noted in a thread aapadv started when his UB arrived. Both throw a great picture, I just ended up with the JVC. Colors dont really bother me too much as of now, if they do, I'll spring for a VP of some sort. Other than that, very happy. Front projection is awesome, I'd recommend it to anyone really wanting that theater experience at home.

We went to see Dark Knight Friday night, and I can say that the theater PQ was not even close to being on the same level as with the 1080UB and HD-DVD or BD at home. Granted, it's a larger picture but a 116" at home isn't small either. I wonder if they are using digital projectors nowadays as well and the resolution isn't good enough for that large of screen. I don't remember the film projectors having bad PQ but then again, 1080p wasn't available for home use the last time I went to the movies.

There's no question, 1080p is simply stunning and this projector delivers. Solid, deep, dark blacks with excellent detail, colors that just pop off the screen and sharpness that is fantastic. My daughter said "Dad, it looks 3D". I did not calibrate, just took it out of the box and set it to "Theater Dark 1". I don't plan to use AVIA until I get a few hundred hours on the bulb. I can say there is a significant difference between 720p and 1080p. It really is almost like looking through a window the image is so stunning.

I just picked up "The Forbidden Kingdom" to watch tonight.

I just ordered a ProCinema 1080UB from my local dealer... for a ridiculous price. As cheap, or cheaper, that I have seen the Home Cinema selling for. And I will get a free lamp, free mount, $300 rebate, and 1 year warranty extension (to FOUR years!)

Sounds like mechanically the Home and Pro are virtually identical. Supposedly the Pro is ISF'd from factory, is black, and comes with the extras. Those should be the only differences.

I am going from a Marantz VP4001. A stunning projector, to be sure, I just want that 1080P goodness! ;)

Let us know you guys like your 1080UBs!
