I am pretty late getting into the game of digital transfer from player to TV.

I have been using high quality component cables for years now.. and the picture quality is quite good... till I switched over the a digital HDMI cable this week I purchased from another member here.

while not a day and night difference.. the sharpness increased a bit. I really noticed the color depth is deeper now. The subtle grays and blue tones have better definition now.

Like I said.. not a night and day difference.. but with my old tube TV it did improve the picture so that I feel now I'm getting the most I can out of the aging gear I have. ;)

* my tv only has DVI inputs.. so I had to get one of them HDMI to DVI adapters, it worked great though.

The biggest difference between HDMI and Component is that HDMI represents color values digitally, whereas Component undergoes analog reconstruction by a color decoder. The problem there is that pretty much every color decoder in consumer gear pushes red and is NTSC inaccurate. On a properly calibrated set where you can adjust the color decoding, the differences are minimal.

My experience here is that analog TV set's like the analog input, Digital sets LCD, Plasma and the like look best with a digital input. But even with that said, it's always the source as I'm very happy with a 480i signal with a S-Video input from a DVB MPeg2 satellite receiver, which is really close to a nice HDMI input from DirecTV STB.
