I have yet to even set it up and have only glanced at the manual but have not seen any info. What do I need to make this happen? Is it possible? Is there an external device needed?

    You need one of these.

It does not have to be from signal cable - any 1/8" to RCA adapter will work. Signal cable will just provide you with a little higher quality for the price. (imo of course)

Yup, go to any Radio Shack or Best Buy & pick one up. I love having music playing all day long without having to get up & change cd's!

Just plug the 2 rca's into an unused input, (I have mine in the VCR) & the mini into your Ipod and away you go.

Thanks guys. I can not see getting anything that does not keep it charged, because more than likely it will stay there unless I am uploading or on a trip.

I don't have an Ipod. But I have a charger that works via electricity. I just plug one end into the usb end of the player & the other into an outlet.

;) I am quite certain that I have read that is possible somewhere in my EE studies, but the dock will be nince to have along with the mini hookup.
