Wireless Router & Music

Hey guys,

I want to know if there is a way to have my receiver hooked up to my wireless router to play my music. I want to know is this possible to play music from my lap top through my wireless router that would be connected to my receiver.

Is this possible? if not what do you guys suggest for getting tunes from my computer to my receiver.

    What reciever do you have?

    I do not think this is possible. How would you output the digital audio over a wireless connection. I dont think it could even be done with a wired connection. Recieving a router signal for a single particular file, requires proccessing and ethernet capabilities that an AVR does not have. The AVR would see the audio as an utranslatable language.

    I have a HK146. I have heard of it being done. You can some how connect your music library wirelessly though the router and then run a Y cable to your receiver from the router. I just don't knwo if its only special routers that do this or it is a myth or what.

    how far apart is your laptop from your receiver? you could always hook it directly up to your receiver with a $5 3.5mm to RCA cord from monoprice

    Use a long optical, or coax to send music directly to your receiver.

    I have a 25ft Y cable but after I run it past all all sorts of other electronics is makes the speakers sound bad. So, I was going to see if wireless would cheaply help me out. I have to buy a wireless router and didn't know if I could pull this off

    usually the 3.5mm audio out jack creates a hum/static/etc. if you dont have optical/coax out jacks then you can get an external sound card with those outs. they run under $75. optical/coax will make a huge difference in sound quality compared to rca

    I've done this before, but I have a dedicated HTPC in the theater room to stream my music to. So it goes from Desktop PC --> HTPC over WiFi and then HTPC --> receiver through optical/coax digital.

    That is not a bad idea or a bad price. I am at work and will have to check if I have a optical/coax out jack on my dell. So that cable would be able to plug right into the receiver?

    oh. Sorry for the funny wording. The home theater adapter you plug via usb into your computer would you plug the optical/coax cable into that?? Would that send video too being a coax cable? Sorry I am pretty new to alot of this stuff and may ask some dumb questions

    Go to parts express for the digital cable. They are impervious to noise, and very cheap for long runs.

    - Yes, you will plug the Adapter via USB into laptop, then the optical cable into that adapter, which runs to your receiver.

    - Would that send video too being a coax cable?
    No, it will be audio only. To do video, you will need HDMI or DVI outs for best quality. If not, then S-Video will work, if not then RCA works. Dells will typically have S-Video outs. It would be easy to run the S-Video directly to your TV and let the TV do video switching.
    Your last resort will be VGA to S-Video/RCA . However, make sure your video card supports TV-Out, or else you won't get any kind of picture.

    Go to Netgear.com and check out their digital music player. I use it along with a Linksys Wireless G router from my desk top PC and it does a grand job.

    But this is still not an internet router? I thought the OP was asking for internet connetion and pc to AVR audio connection directly from a wireless router?

    You would need 2 wireless adapters on the PC, one for internet and one to transmit audio to the AVR, correct?

    Apple's air tunes does this.

    Now you can control iTunes on your laptop with your ipod touch too, so it's basically a remote.

    I don't know of many devices that convert wireless data signals to a bitstream that a receiver can decode. If you're talking about going directly from a wireless router to a receiver, then it ain't gonna happen unless the router is designed for it.

    Air tunes, squeezebox, and the Sonos stuff are popular ones that can do what is wanted here.

    I have used a Roku for years for my whole house system. They are pretty inexpensive these days. I use it just for background music on the weekends or for parties it is great.
    I like speakers that are bigger than a small refrigerator but smaller than a big refrigerator:D

    I now have 3 media servers. I bought a d-link one awhile back for $89 (just after they went to a new model. i think it was the 860?). I then put Tversity on my computer (it's free) and was able to play everything through my system. It's nothing special, but does the job (and it doesn't matter where you computer is as long as it's connect to the network). Then when I got my PS3, it worked as a media server as well. Then I bought an external 500g drive (it's a buffalo drive) and it comes with a media server as well. I also have a Wii, and I think that has a media server built in as well, but I haven't tried it. Basically what I am saying is, do a search for wireless media servers, and you should find something in your budget (as long as it's a couple of bucks more than an RCA cable). If you can find a refurb, you may be able to find something cheaper than a cable (and you won't have to plug and unplug something every time you want to listen to your tunes).
