Good speakers reveal a bad recording, and I think a good display also shows the shortcomings of the video source.

That may be the case, but I'm starting to suspect my HTPC's DVD playback software as the culprit. Many of the folks on AVS use TheaterTek because it is supposedly one of the best software decoders, but right now I'm just using Windows Media Center (not too good) and InterVideo WinDVD (slightly better) for DVD playback.

So far, I've been extremely impressed with the picture on HD sources. I was wondering what you guys use for calibration - do you just tweak the settings in the menu, or would it be recommended to purchase a colorimeter like the EyeOne to get a better calibration?

I'm also having an issue with the projector in which it emits a smell. It smells like burnt plastic and I'm not sure if I should return the projector or not. Sami, did yours have this smell when you first powered it on?

I know mine did this for the first 20 hours or so but after that, all is good.

Cool. What are you running for SD sources? It seems like mine needs a good external scaler for SD.

To be all out honest with you, I do very little SD viewing with my projector. Most if not all viewing is done with HD material. All my gear is run to my Denon 3808 receiver then from the receiver to the Epson so the only scaler in my mix is whats in the 3808, BUT, I have the scaler disabled so no scaling is done just straight pass through. When watching SD DVD's I use the XA2 HD-DVD player which has the Reon processor built inn so SD DVD's look amazing. I know, alot of help huh!

Haha, everyone seems to watch only HD on the Epson.

But I'm not going to get HD versions of DVDs like Spider-Man, etc. It just makes no sense to own 2 copies of the SAME movie.

Would a DVDO iScan HD+ or VP30 make a significant improvement?

Me personally, I've had no experience with standalone scalers. From what I've read, many people praise there ability but as I said, I've had none.

Buy a good upconverting player, I see no point of spending huge amounts of money to scale SD-DVD. I thought you were on a student budget? I wish my student budget was like your when I was back in college... :)

You can get HD-DVD players for almost nothing on E-bay.

Haha, all you have to do is get a full scholarship, and then you'll have lots of money left over for (a) food (b) books (c) HT gear :)

Government paid my college years, actually they paid everyone that was a citizen. I still didn't have money for a home theater, only beer...

I don't know, drink less beer? Haha

But seriously, I've been working longer than I can remember (architectural firm and graphics design job) and I've been mowing quite a few lawns too :)

One question...which image mode is best for HD viewing? I've been using TheaterBlack 1 most of the time but I did try the other settings. However, they all looked so different that it was hard to choose.
