My Setup: Big Speakers, Little Room

Hey everyone. I saw a few people are posting pictures of their setups. I'm in the process of hooking everything up in my den (10 x 10 x 8 foot ceiling).

In this space, I'm putting two RTi10s as fronts, RTi6s as rears, a CSi3 center channel and a KEF PSW2150. All this is being powered by an Onkyo TX-SR705. Depending on the absurbness of the setup (falling somewhere between insane and down right stupid), I will either be using a 32 inch Westinghouse 720p/1080i LCD or my Samsung 46 inch 1080p LCD.

(NOTE: I'm a college student home for the summer. All this will be going into my apartment with a 20x 30 living room/great room, so this is just an experiment.)

Initial pictures coming soon!

Man am I jealous. My speakers were made with apple boxes with radio shack tweeters, 5" mids and 12" woofers in them when I went to school. Dang

it's genetic. My dad is a crazy shopper and so am I. It's still more money than what most college kids invest in this stuff, but it was all very reasonable.

Geez. Times have changed. When I was in college, I had a 13" TV and a JVC boombox with dual cassettes and removable speakers. Sounds pathetic, but it was more than most of my friends had.

Wow....all those things in a 10 X 10 room, huh? That's not much bigger than the walk in closet in my master bedroom! :D But who am I to talk as I have a pair of Klipschorns in my 12 X 14 office.

but it was all very reasonable.

Nothing more reasonable than having Rti6's 3-inches from your ear :) Need a pic of the front soundstage to really put things in perspective. That's a pun. . . I think.

I thought I was nuts when I was in college. After I made $12/hr of tax free money traveling the country for Primesource one summer, I put $700 into a 27" Panasonic "flat-screen" CRT. Wasn't widescreen, wasn't hdtv. Weighed a ton. Loved that damned TV.

Also put $700 into one of the first HTIB's from Fry's. It was awesome (I thought). 250 total watts of power. 4 small satellite speakers, one small center, one passive subwoofer. DVD player wasn't even DD/DTS, and best output was s-video. Regardless, I was the envy of all my friends who didn't even own DVD players.

Yours is obviously much better than that.

Bedroom: Samsung HPR-4252, Toshiba HD-A2, HK 3480, Signal Cable, AQ speaker cable, Totem Dreamcatchers, SVS PB10-NSD, URC MX-850

Hey everyone. I saw a few people are posting pictures of their setups. I'm in the process of hooking everything up in my den (10 x 10 x 8 foot ceiling).

I like having my HT in a small room, as it makes it more of a movie theater experience.

My room is a spare bedroon 10'6" by 11'6".

At one end is a 57" Hitachi digital monitor (ISF calibrated), 2 LSi15s, LSiC, PSW1000. The left wall has the equipment stand; Sony 7100ES (used as pre-amp), Sunfire TGA5400, Sony 9100ES DVD/SACD (connect to 7100ES via Ilink). The right wall has 2 two-shelf bookcases holding DVDs, CDs. The back has 2 LSi15s with a recliner in the middle. The walls, and ceiling have Auralex acoustic foam in the appropriate spots.

At this moment in time I am very happy with the picture and sound.
Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes

Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables

Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
    Three 20 amp circuits.

If you have not done so, head over to the showcase and you can see alot of peoples rooms....

quick suggestion - center the chairs on the wall (rather than the window) and face the RTi6's at the wall rather than the chairs. (so the backs of the speakers are facing the chairs)

Recalibrate and give it a listen - let us know what you think.

    Mains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
    Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
    Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
    Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
    Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms)

I got my first stereo (2 speakers) when I turned 31. Didn't get my first car until I was 37. I'm still a virgin.

That room screams for an RM system.

Yah, It's kinda difficult. The Room is actually 10x10 with a 2.5 x 4.5 cut out where a small closet used to be. Make it kind of difficult to get everything perfectly lined up.

Just talked to the guy I'm buying my RTi10s from; Should be all setup by tomorrow afternoon.

I'll let you guys know how fast I go deaf.

No worries about the size. Small rooms are fantastic for being able to load the room easily. It's tough to get a proper sound stage and imaging in such a small room but they have plenty of benefits that make up for the pitfalls. My room is 8x13 and I've been very happy with it. (lsi9's, 15" atlas sub in a 6.5 cubic inch box, 2x class A monoblocks, pre, cdp and tt)

An RM system might be a bit pointless if he's moving into a 20x30 room soon.

    Front sound stage without covers

Final Rear Setup (Decided to replace the chairs with a loveseat and move it over so that it is aligned with the tv, and therefore the front speakers.)

I think that just about does it for the initial setup

It appears you have no problem with movies being loud enough.

It's a small set-up, but looks like you've made the best of the space.

Hmmmm.....Not sure what this means, but the dialog seemed a bit "hollow" I guess. Something not quite right about it. Anyone have any ideas? Is this because the center channel is off-center slightly, or should the speaker be angled up instead of straight?

It's likely because your center channel is inside that cabinet.
