Toshiba Xa1 Problem

Can you believe Toshiba doesnt fix thier own crap???
They told me to ship the player to them, then they would sell me one for $215.
Or ship it to a "service" repair shop.
The other night, we started watching Transformers in skinnamax. I said "Family, why watch it on crappy cable, when we have the HD version?" So we decided, for the millionth time to watch it on HD.
Popped in the DVD, and after waiting 3 minutes, "No Disk". Wiped DVD put it back in, another 3 minutes later "No Disk".
Put a SD DVD in, started playing within seconds. Hmmmmm.. "Let me check for firmware updates", I thought. Ok, new firmware. Installed within a few minutes. Put Tans back in...............waiting........waiting......waiting......
.....waiting......."No Disk"
"Ok, let me try Harry Potter and Beowolf HD".....waiting........ "No Disk"
"I'll reset the player." Unplugged the player..waited about 10 minutes (I want to be sure). Plugged it back in, put HD in......waiting....waiting....waiting.. "No Disk"
"Ok, lens must be dirty."
Opened case, unhooked all ribbon cables and power cables. Tore down to the dvd drive. Opened drive, cleaned lens and while I was in there ...blew off dust from fans and circuit boards. (This isnt my first rodeo cleaning the inside of electronics).
Put everything back in order and together. Snugged down the screws. Plugged the power cable back in and presses the standby (power) button. Nothing...... No lights, no red or green or blue lights.
Opened the case once more to make sure I didnt forget anything. Everything checked out ok. Everything was iin place. Every cable secure and tight. Every clip, clipped, everything was back to where it was originally.
Twice I was able to get it to turn on, fans running, with no LED display, just the center blue light, giving a slight blink ever so often. And my wife thinks I'm crazy, cause I am talking to myself, while all of this was going on.
2 days later....and now I have a big heavy metal paper weight.
BluRay, is looking better and better.
Anyways...thanks for reading my rant...

BluRay, is looking better and better.
If you're serious there are many great father's day deals going on right now...
http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68748
For $198, you can pick up a magnavox at Walmart. Or get the same $100 gift card deal on a nice panasonic or ps3. They also have $15 deals on select blu-rays. Amazon is matching prices on the Walmart disk deals and in addition they have specially priced father's day blu-ray sets and just added a buy 2 get one free deal:

And, there's also the 10 buck J&R blu-ray deals that doro posted in the linked thread above.
But if you're going to try and get it fixed...I hope things work out

Well, the BluRay I am looking at is ~$400. I need/want 5.1/7.1 analog out. Beings my HK does not decode the HD audio formats.
I would love to find out why the Toshiba is acting up. Everthing is back as it should be. Nothing was changed out.Monitor 7b's front

That Maganavox is horrible. Good for those that just want HD, bad for those that want to experience it all.I should've listened way back in 2008, they told me I'd go broke... they were right

Sounds like the new panasonic BD-50 would give you what you need. But you may have to wait until the Christmas shopping season to get a good deal on it. If you don't want a player with compromises, then I wouldn't get most of the blu-ray players out now as they're getting pretty old compared to the BD-50 feature set. Again, hope you can find out what's wrong with your Tosh... -
Man, sorry to hear that.
I have the XA1 and haven't had any problems, but I don't look forward to dealing with Toshiba customer service when I do!
It is out of warranty, I assume? My HT

So you have no idea if it's the circuitry or the drive ?I should've listened way back in 2008, they told me I'd go broke... they were right

So you have no idea if it's the circuitry or the drive ?
Circuit, most likely. The drive seems fine and would not stop a power on. If the drive was bad, it would just throw an error code. From my understanding/.
I just cant figure out why at least the standby light doesnt come on. There is an inline power fuse, which is still ok.
I am baffled. I'm thinking it could be the power/standby board. I will lokk at it more closely tonight or this weekend.
Ribbon cables seen to be fine also. When I did get it to power up there was a red light flashing on the, what looks like, a flash card bard. This board mounts about a half inch above the circuit/pc style, top board. It is the closest seperate board to the RAM card.
I dont know.... Like I said, I never had anything break after cleaning. Usually if it worked before, it worked after.Monitor 7b's front
