Got a Dolby Pro Logic Pre/Pro ?

You may have read my recent post with a request for a DD/DTS pre/pro; new acquisition of DVD/DVD-A player with DD and DTS decoding means that I now only need a high quality dolby pro logic pre/pro with 5.1 RCA inputs or 5.1 with DB-25 connector. Let me know what you've got sitting in your closets.

Am I confused in seeing that you've got or are looking for a DD/DTS pre/pro and want a secondary pre/pro to do Pro Logic? How would you possibly make that work, and why wouldn't the pre/pro that you got with DD/DTS automatically do PL since generally the newer products are backwards capable, but obviously older aren't forwards capable.....

EDIT: Alternately, if you're talking about one only, a PL p/p wouldn't be work for you since it wouldn't be capable of taking the decoded signal from your DVD-A.....

I dont need two, I just need a DPL or "surround" pre/pro because the DVD player has a built in decoder and 5.1 outputs (RCA). The pre/pro just has to amplify the signal from the DVD. We're talking strictly analog ins and outs for the pre, because the DVD handles all the digital stuff and spits out the 5.1 signal. I need a pre that in its day would have been touted as "Dolby Digital Ready". Comprende?

I get what you're saying, but even if your DVD-A player is doin the decoding, you're not gonna get the true benefit of having a the player if the receiver isn't going to actually split the signal to each channel, but rather phantom it as best as it could based on it being an older technology.....right?

No, Im not going to send the DVD-A or any signal for that matter to the preamp and have it process it for dolby prologic. It will already have 6 channels and wont need any processing, the preamp will serve to amplify the signal to send to the amps, to provide volume control, and to allow for additional (stereo) sources, one of which will be a TV tuner, which I might want to then process with the preamp's Dolby pro logic.

He's looking for a pre that has 5.1 inputs, ie 'digital ready'. He is not wanting to pass an *encoded* digital signal, but *decoded* analog signal. His source is doing the decoding, not the pre. The pre doesn't need to split anything, it's already been done at the source.

I have my HT rig setup similar, I have a PL 'Digital Ready' receiver, and my DVD player decodes the DD and DTS, and feeds it from 5.1 (rca) outputs, to the receivers 5.1 (rca) inputs.

thanks for the heads up, I had only been watching the RSP- Series, not realizing there were RTC units that were multichannel. I am watching this auction along with some others. Does anyone know where to get a DB-25 to 6-channel RCA Cable?

I dont know, if it were me, I would jump. I checked out the ended items and it looks like the only other one sold recently went for slightly more than what you could get this for shipped. If this is what you are looking for, then if you wait to see if you can save a buck or two it may end up gone... Plus- Its in Baltimore- You could go pick up this thing yourself and even take a tour of Polk. Now how cool would that be?

Yes, but there are other items that are of the same or higher quality which will probably go for less. Also, I need to be sure of the status and price of obtaining a DB-25 to 6 channel cable. If no one responds I suppose I will post another thread.

Yikes, as I feared, prohibitively expensive. 350 shipped plus a 100 dollar cable is 450, and I can get a damn good Dolby Digital/DTS pre/pro for that

What DD/DTS pre can you get for 450? Won't you spend $100 on interconnects regardless, you will still need 3 pair, db25 or not.

I have 6 pair at least of Monster Interlink 250 already. I can get an H/K Signature 2.0 with the latest chip for 450.00, you can too, just search for it on ebay. 450 is even a little high for this model.

Well kids, I made the buy. Not terribly excited, but I liked it enough to go for it. I picked up the Marantz SR870. Its a receiver, which goes against my previously held opinion that you should go with a seperate preamp if you can; However, I did stipulate that if you cant afford a seperate preamp (I would love the Outlaw 950) that a receiver would be better than nothing. Anyways, I got it for about 150, shipped, which is a lot less than 450 shipped for the Rotel, or any any other competitors. It was almost top of the line in its day I believe ($1600), I could give you all the specs, but just go check out the auction:

Thanks for everyone's input, I will give try and give a review, but it might be awhile as I wont have room for 5 speakers in one room til May.
