Props to Panasonic and their Plasma Concierge!

I gotta give some credit to Panasonic and their excellent customer service (in the plasma department). If you don't have a Panny plasma, you might not have heard of it, but they have something called the Plasma Concierge. Its basically a priority customer service offering (free of charge) for Panasonic Plasma owners.
Last May, I picked up a heavily discounted 2006 model plasma on open box clearance. It had full warranty from Panny and I promptly entered my info into the Plasma Concierge website, thinking, this is probably a waste. I'll never use it.
I was wrong.
Back when I first got the TV, I had read about something called "purple snakes" over at AVSforum. At the time, I couldn't see the 'purple' problem with my TV, so I forgot about it for many months. Well low and behold, I started to notice the purple problem a few months back and it kept bothering me. The problem only surfaced during certain types of scenes. Otherwise the picture was still great. I revisited the issue at AVS and it seemed that many people were able to get a fix that helped the problem significantly (but not completely) and some had received a refund or replacement set due to the inability of Panasonic to completely fix the problem.
So, I figured with a few months left on my manufacturer's warranty, I better have this set looked at. At the very least, I could get the fix done and have the problem minimized. At best, I could get a new set.
So, I logged my problem into the Plasma Concierge website (took about 3 minutes) and got a case number emailed to me.
Two days later, I got a call from the Concierge (its really a group, not just one person
) and they scheduled a visit from a regional Panny Field Rep. I was kinda surprised that they didn't just hook me up with a local service company.
Yesterday, the Field Rep came to my house and verified the problem. It only took him 5 minutes and 1 movie for him to agree that the problem was there. I thought for sure he would have the replacement parts to at least attempt to fix the problem, but nope, he didn't even want to try a fix. He just said that 'most likely' they would replace the set, but he had to check some things and talk to his manager.
Today I got a call back from the field rep and yes, for sure, they are going to replace my TV with the newer model, which just happens to be full 1080p! (the old one was 768p) Not that I'll really see the difference in a 42" model, that's in the bedroom, but hey, if they are going to give it to me, then I'll take it.
So, bottom line, I'll have a new 2007 model (the '08s are not out yet) to replace my '06 model in about 2 weeks. A Panasonic technician will have the TV delivered to him, he will take it out of the box and verify that its in good working order, then he will call me to set up a convenient time to come out and replace the TV (wall mounting and everything). He will just take away the old TV and it will probably end up at the refurbdepot or someplace like that.
Couldn't be easier really. There was no arguing, no back and forth hassling. Just total respect to me as a consumer who spent a decent amount of money on a TV and expected better picture quality from Panny.
This is a stark contrast to the problems I had with Toshiba 3 years ago when my RPTV was having a bad problem with 'sparklies' in the image. Getting a replacement set from them took 3-4 repairs, 3+ months, and numerous calls/headaches, and ultimately, I was without a TV for a couple weeks due to my repair man making my TV totally inoperable. On top of that, I had to fork out some extra money to get a new replacement TV (instead of taking a refurbed model). What a nightmare.
So, anyway, if your in the market for a plasma, consider Panny's customer service as an additional selling point. In my case, it really payed off.

Billbill,
That is great to learn, i have a 42' panasonic plasma too and thought about calling custsomer service due to some burn-in on the left/right 4:3 borders. I only notice the very slight burn-in when there is an almost still image of a very light background like blue sky. I may not have been as careful as I should have been during the first few months of ownership about 'streching" 4:3 content as I am now. Any thoughts about if that might be covered?Onkyo TX-SR805

Its a long read, but here is all the info you need to identify the problem.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=765341 (around post #175, you start to get images of what the problem looks like, post #535 has a link to some great full size pics)
Some of the images shown in the AVSforum are much worse than I ever saw. Most of the time, I had to look for the problem but when I did, I could find it.
It shows up more with DVD in my case, but I can see it in HD feeds as well. Usually shows up in areas of the image that have low light, noise, and/or poorly defined contrast, ie: shadows, foggy areas, and sometimes faces if the lighting is low. . Harry Potter 4 and Snatch were the two movies that brought out the problem worst for me. I found it in King Kong too. It also showed up in the various grayscale ramps on my Avia test disc.
The problem is most prevalent in 42" plasmas from the '06 model year (PX60, PX600, and PX6), so there is a good chance that you could find the problem. How long do you have on your original 1y warranty? -

Not sure. Are you under the original 1y warranty still?
Are you sure you have burn-in and not just image retention? If you have a test disc like Avia, put a full white image on the screen (100 IRE?) and leave it there for about a minute. That would get rid of any image retention. Then check to see if you are still seeing the 4:3 lines. I suspect not because these things are rated to 60000 hours, so it would take a lot of time to get real burn-in. -

Thanks. I'll have to find a test disk to buy and see if it is retention. I have noticed some retention that goes away on it's own after leaving something like CNN on all day with their banners and graphics.
I also have the 4yr extra extended warranty so it would be nice in a strange way to see something go wrong with the set and possibly get a new version.Onkyo TX-SR805

That's great to know, Bill. I am glad it was a happy ending for you. Btw, the new one, how does it compare against your A3000, PQ wise?I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I won't have the new set for a couple weeks. Besides, its hard to compare a 55" to a 42". The 42" will look sharper because its smaller. It should be a fine TV for the bedroom, no matter what. -

Reberly,
Unless you have your extended warranty through Panasonic, I doubt you will get a new set unless there is something wrong with yours that they cannot fix. Most 3rd party companies will just hire a repair man to fix the problem. My experience was due to it being under the original manufacturer warranty and dealing straight with the Plasma Concierge. -
Well I never seen that problem ever maybe not my model of tv Panny Plasma 42-PX60U? Seems they talk about models without the U on the end of the #.

U or no U, they are the same model. Some people just don't bother to list the whole model number. Your model is one of the few that tends to have the problem, just like mine. If you haven't seen it yet, then don't go looking for it anymore, especially if you are close to being out of warranty. You probably could find it if you really looked for it. I'm anal, so I looked and found it. Once I found it, I couldn't forget about it, so I knew if I didn't call for service, I would regret it after my warranty ran out.
EDIT: One of the things I remember from combing though that lengthy thread is that the problem apparently is not visible if you have the TV in one of the default settings (cinema, vivid, standard) and haven't customized them at all. Not sure how you have your TV adjusted, but if you haven't bothered to tweak the settings, maybe that's why you haven't seen the problem. -
Well I look but again I don't believe I ever seen anything like that, and I a bit anal myself. Being a consumer electronic technician once I think I would have been on that issue way before now, but it's over a year old so I bit screwed anyway if there's an issue. But for $1100 bucks for the set today I place this in prospective in the whole picture.

Just enjoy the TV then. Like I was saying, I only looked for it because I was still under warranty and I wanted to be damn sure I didn't have the issue after it was expired.
When I say I had to look for it, I mean I had to sit there, 4 feet from the screen, pausing, rewinding, slo-mo, etc, looking for scenes that made it most apparent. Most of the time when it appeared, it was brief.
Honestly, If Panasonic had looked at the TV and said it wasn't a problem in their eyes, I probably would have let it rest. The problem really wasn't that bad. 95% of the time, the picture looked great, especially from 8 feet away. I had to try though, and in my case, looks like it was worth it. -
LOL thats why I've never seen it in the nearly 2 years since I've had it... Im blind as a bat from 10 feet away.Onkyo TX-SR805

Bill, I happy you got your Plasma TV replaced and the fact that you gave us the input for the problem. You're Great Thank you.
Settings what I got from AVS also.
Standard / Vivid
Picture +24/+22
Brightness +9/+10
Color -8/-7
Tint -1/-2
Sharpness -10/-20
I can tell you those setting are pretty close, and I checked them with AVIS setup DVD.

That brightness level looks very high. Do you have the black level set to darker or lighter? I recommend "lighter" as the best setting. Darker seems to crush blacks very badly and you give up shadow detail. Also, make sure you have CATS off.
If you have it on Darker, I would suggest you set the black level to Lighter, then lower brightness down to about -6 or -7. I found much better shadow detail that way. Most of my settings (other than brightness) are pretty close to yours and I've gone over them a few times with Avia and the HDnet calibration program.
You didn't mention color temp, but Warm is supposed to be the closest to 6500k.
BTW, I've never used the vivid setting for any length of time. Too much built in edge enhancement (that's why you have to have your sharpness so much lower) -
Bill, does this coverage apply to Panasonic LCD sets? I have 2 32" flat screen Panasonic LCD TVs.[

I doubt that the Plasma Concierge covers the smaller LCDs. -
My replacement Plasma was delivered today as expected. Brand new 42pz700u in the box, unopened. The service guy helped me take the old one off the wall, swap out the brackets, and remount the new one. In and out in about an hour and he took away the old one and all the packaging for the new one. No need to keep the packing anyway since this one would have to be replaced under warranty.
I'm luvin the new one. Very clean image. Much improved over the old one.
