I think I can understand both points of view regarding Wizzy's most recent heated post.
Let me summarize the posts.
A. It's very important to stop any further attacks by terrorists. If this means that certain freedoms are modified then so be it. I can live with it.
B. Losing any of our freedoms is bad. Many examples of this are in history. And do you trust the government with these new powers?
I think that was the gist of most of the posts.
BUT, I think we are missing the real point. What happened to the debate where citizens get a say in what happens? Or will we continue to be treated in a paternalistic manner?
History of facts:
1. After 9/11 Bush and many of his staff said when asked that no freedoms would be lost in the war on terror.
2. A few years later a news paper released a story that said that there were millions of illegal wire taps.
3. The Bush administration initially denied these wire taps.
4. The Bush administration then said they needed these wire taps to fight the war on terror.
5. The Bush administration and congress pass a law that allows past illegal wire taps to be free from procecution.
6. The law passes and the polk club starts a debate about this issue.
The key issue is that we as Americans were lied to about loosing these freedoms and we had NO SAY in the decision.
The checks and balances and our constitution were bypassed. We were not informed about this bypass. That is the part that gets me pissed and it's not just about politics.
