Onkyo 805 height clearance?

The manual says there needs to be at least 8" of clearance on top of the receiver and 4" on either side and the rear for hot air to escape. That seems like an awful lot. Should I actually listen to this and make sure? I just rearranged my shelf so there's about 5.5" and lots in the back (the shelf is open at the end) but only about 1" on either side.

Either give it that much space, or get a fan to cool it. It really does get hot.
