just wanted to get some input as to the quality of these recievers... i have an opportunity to get a pretty good deal on either one.
I have heard that they are simply pretty, and wanted to know where they are lacking. my current setup is an onkyo sr604, driving rti10s rti6s monitor 30s and a csi3. I acquired a pair of carver amps i wanted to run the rti10s off of, but the 604 has a lack of preamp outputs so i cant. The marantz would eventually become a pre as i would like to use all external amplification. So i would like to hear thoughts and experience... if there are other avrs that you prefer let me know.

thanks in advance
Jeff

Marantz makes some nice AVRs, I know HK and Denon are highly suggested as well. I would look into NAD as well, they have gobs of power. Are you planning on bi-amping the RTis with the Carvers? What model amps are they? Sorry for the questions, I'm trying to get a little insight to what you've got already...

The carvers are pm-300 and m200t, they are both 125x2. yea i was planning on biamping the 10s and having the avr run the others until i get more amps. Denon or hk models would be helpful from anyone... im looking for around 400$ as thats what the marantz cost.

i had a sr4400 , i never seemed to complain about it,(i usually find something) solid operation even when pushed, good menu systems that never fell over and were quick to load. but i would recommend listening before you buy as compared to my Cambridge (with menu that only operates with a tv and cycling selections on the effects rather than one button per type, then to make it worse the text has to scroll along the screen until you read it all. )the two amps sound totally different.

the Marantz should be good as a pre.. then with those Carver amps.. should be a killer system.. i don't think you need to bi wire them though with the Carver amps.. i wouldn't personally..

Maybe ill try without the bi amping with the carvers when i have an amp with preouts. Thanks for the input everyone. i was only worried that i would regret this decision as many people refer to marantz receivers as simply pretty.

The Marantz AVRs I've heard, 7 and 8xxx series have excellent sound quality, perhaps better than the HKs I've heard. I don't know anything about the 4/5xxx series, but assume they will be at least similar or better than the HK 2--4xx series.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B

I have a Marantz 5001 and an 8001. Both are fantastic and I suspect output more than advertised although I have never measured it. I use my 8001 as a pre- with my Sunfire and it works great.

In fact, last night I was moving my LSi-15 while it was cranking and the negative wire came unplugged. I instinctively started to hook it up again even though it was pushing a massive power load and the speaker fired up with the wire about 3 inches away as a continuous arc jumped across the wire. I was like "wow, i better turn this **** off before I electrocute myself". This is probably more of a testament to my Sunfire than the Marantz, but IMO Marantz makes far better products than HK, Sony, Yamaha and many Denon. Their customer support is outstanding typically responding to emails in less than two hours, even on the weekend.

My brother inlaw has a Marantz SR6300. Ever since i heard that thing i wanted it. Only thing is i'm too proud to copy him so I tried a Denon 3805. It was good but didn't tickle me like his Marantz does. Now I've got an Arcam....but that's just in a different league.(and price range)
