WOW.. My HK 347 and HDMI issues

Hey guys,

I just got an HK AVr 347 based on the recommendations from a bunch of people here (thanks for all your help btw). After hooking it up, I have to say wow. The difference between the 605 and the HK is tremendous. The sounds on my RTi10's are clearer and its tremendously LOUD, with no clipping. Sheer awesome is the only thing i can say.

Now for the problem. Im having issues with my video, specifically all my non-hd channels are stretched, and all my HD channels don't even appear! What gives? Im running a component from my Comcast DVR to my HK (HDMI input 1) and then running an HDMI cable from the HK to my Sony Wega.

Any ideas? My sony Wega is 720p rear projection...

try bi-passing the receiver and go directly to the TV then you'll know if it's the receiver.

already did that... the Comcast DVR now goes to my TV directly for VIDEO, but is still connected to the receiver for AUDIO. My DVD is connected to the TV directly via HDMI and running 2 RCA cables connected to the receiver for AUDIO.

With the above setup, the picture is exactly the way its suppose to be. But with this method im not touching any of the HDMI ports on the receiver and its a pain jumping around to watch something.

    Any other thoughts. Thanks

can you try component just for the hell of it to see if your HK might have HD issues?

I dont understand? Do you want me to run component from my cable box to the receiver? If that is the question, then I have already tried that and am getting the issues i described in the first post.

If you're asking to use the component directly from my comcast to my TV, then i tried that as well, and get normal results.

I guess its something with the receiver, how its transmitting the signal, but where should i look first?

it sounds like your receiver is the issue

I narrowed it down that far. My receiver says it does 1080i/p pass through, which i am assuming means it doesnt upconvert a 720 signal; if it receives a 1080i signal it will just relay it. is this correct?

I don't know, I had an issue with the hd on my 347, so I sold it. I am using my 335, but I do HDMI directly to the tv and use digcoax for sound. I bought a harmony 659 and let it switch inputs for me. You might want to call HK CS

There's an HK 247/347 thread over on AVS that should answer your questions. IIRC, it will pass HD signals in their native resolution via HDMI in/out. I think your problem is that you're coming in via component. I'm not sure if it will pass the audio (think so). If you want to get DD/DTS from your DVD player, I'm pretty sure it will work without your RCA in, but if not use a digital connection, coax or optical or you won't get the 5/6.1 formats.

Your HK does not upconvert the video signal at all. It is just "pass through" if you send the video signal to it via HDMI. I have my Dish Network DVR connected via HDMI directly to the Sony tv for video and I connect the DVR via optical to my HK for 5.1 audio with no problems. Same way for my DVD player. Video to tv, audio to HK via optical. I use a Harmony 1000 remote and it will automatically switch the HK and the tv to the correct inputs for whatever activity I chose.

Not sure if that helps you or not.

thanks. what you mentioned above is what i am doing now- passing video to the tv and passing audio to the receiver via rca's ( i know digital coax or optical would be better)

I thought this might be the case, but when passing HDMI from my DVD directly to the TV, it works perfectly fine.

I think it might be a handshake issue between the DVR and receiver...

I'm running 3 different component 1080i sources into my AVR and outputting a single component to my HDTV, works great on the 805.

hmmm... if i use 2 components as inputs (one from my DVD and one from my DVR), can I do an HDMI out (from receiver to TV) OR will I encounter the same issues that I originally started with. Anyone tried this out- all my components produce 1080i...

Thanks for all the help guys!

This isn't a HDMI vs. component issue. Its a manufacturer issue for not having a robust enough receiver. Then again, it seems like a majority of receivers have issues in one way or another with the different resolutions. My receiver won't do OSD on the HDMI inputs, but has no issues when going from component input to the HDMI output.
