I watched my S-DVD (James Taylor live at the Beacon) and a BluRay (Fantastic 4) last night on my BD30--just simply awesome. I can't get over how well this player does S-DVD. Bev walked in the room and said "Oh, you bought JT on Blu Ray?" I said "no, that's the S-DVD." Keep in mind however, I run the BD30 at 720p via HDMI as my DLP is 720p native--the BD30 does the scaling. After re-calibration with DVE, the picture is breathtaking.

Ron--the big blue ugly bright light on the front can be turned off in the setup menu...just an FYI.

Can you use a Harmony remote with the PS3?

They sell third party solutions that put a usb IR receiver on the unit. It should allow Harmony IR control over everything but turning the unit on (turning the unit off powers down the usb port I think). So you have to use the controller to turn it on. Inconvenient to say the least.

Let me see if I can get a link to the device...

    Edit: Here it is...

But the advantage to the sony bluetooth remote is that you don't have to point the remote at the ps3 as it will even work from the next room over.

Will a PS3 play all my kids current PS2 games? I haven't looked to see if they are backwards compatible!

The 60 gig, if you can still find one, has the hardware of a ps2 included inside and plays pretty much everything. The 80 gig removes some of the more expensive ps2 hardware to keep prices down and does software emulation that plays most (over 2000) ps2 games. The 40 gig took all the remaining ps2 hardware out and does not play any ps2 games.

The only downfall of the PS3 is it's lack of analog outs for lossless audio tracks. Be damn near a perfect machine if it had those. I'll have to move up to an HDMI pre/pro here soon.

    Thanks for the info guys.

Ron..If you go with the BD30, firmware version 1.3 is now available. I had 1.1 loaded on mine, upgraded last night to 1.3 and it was very easy. The firmware addresses (per panasonic):

    1.1- playability and stability
    1.2- playability and stability
    1.3- adds BD-V support

If you go to www.bluray.com click on firmware-->BD30-->download/instructions will walk you thru it.

Sony is offering up $100 off if you apply for their credit card. Basically, with tax, I can land a PS3 for $324 shipped to my door. Seems to be the best deal right now, no analog outs but I can live with that. Seems the PS3 can chew through any BD disc out there.

Great price. Don't forget to give your CDs a spin if you're hooking it up via hdmi. Over at AVS they're saying it's quite a CD player when hooked up that way.
