1080p upscaling

If I have a pre-pro that does 1080p upscaling and I have a TV that does the same, how does this work? Does the TV auto detect the 1080p signal and then doesn't have to upscale?

The TV will take whatever signal you send it and upscale it to display at 1080p.

If you send it a 1080p signal the TV will recognize this and it doesn't need to do any processing/upscaling.

The real question is whether or not your pre-pro is better at the upscaling than your TV.

I believe you can set each unit to do the upscaling. I would set the tv to not upscale and see how well the AVR does it. Then set the AVR to pass the raw signal through and let the TV upscale and see how well the tv does it. Pick the best picture.

Right now your tv is not upscaling if your AVR is. Its doing like you said, reading a 1080p signal and leaving it as is. But your Tv's internal chip might be better than the AVR's, so run the test like I've described.

I would set the tv to not upscale ...

With a fixed pixel display I don't believe this is possible. It has to display at its native resolution. The only time it doesn't upscale/process the signal is if you feed it its native resolution.

Your right ,what I ment was set the AVR to send 1080p signal, like he has it now. Then set the AVR to pass through raw signal (probably 480i or 480p)

speaking of which, does anybody know if there are any receivers out there which upscale/output over HDMI with the on screen display viewable over HDMI? Maybe they all do this, I'm not sure.

My Denon 3808ci on screen is over HDMI. It's also one of the best I've seen.
