Hi,
I am looking to get feedback on a new used phono pre amp to replace the Hagerman Bugle. It will be used to play 78s from now on. I have a phono section in the TAD-150 already, but the Bugle is better. I also have a Carver ct-7 w/phono and it is inferior to the TAD. I would like to keep the price around $250. Audiogon has a couple of preamps of interest. A Superphon Revelation Basic DM $250, a Musical Surroundings Phonomena $325, and a Tricord Dino $275. Of course they all say they are the best, ect. I will be using the Hagerman Piccolo moving coil head amp with the Denon DL-103r so I dont need any mc features. If I spend more than $200-$300 I will buy the Hagerman Cornet2 kit for about $500. Good things are said about the Superphon but its about 15? years old. Any feedback on these models or others I havent seen would be appreciated. Anybody with a great phono section they want to sell? Licorice pizza is good.
PS looks like I will need a steam cleaner also!

Maybe the best sub $200 phono pre I've used is the Parasound Z-phono and the Hagerman Bugle. For this money, look no further than the Bugle. I now use the Hagerman Cornet2 with PICCOLO and Denon 103 and absolutely love it. It is an unbelievable value. So, I suggest the Cornet2 soon and use the Bugle til then or try a Parasound. :)

    Hi,
Well CL to the rescue. I purchased a Superphon Revelation Basic Dual Mono pre amp today here in Seattle for $175. I have listened to it for a couple of sides and it sounds dam fine. I am using the phono section out of the tape loop. Its a tad quieter than the Bugle, maybe not as tight for bass but has good full bass. It has a seperate power supply that is hard wired with a 4 ft cord. It weighs a ton. I think its going to work well for now. I also picked up a Ortophon or 78 cartridge to play the stacks of classical music I got from Shelby. So I'll see what mono 78 recordings are all about. More vinyl to listen to.
