So I complete my upgrade. New receiver, new speakers, new amps. went over my 2 k budget of course, with the help and suggestions of many forum members :-)

Im plugging in my last HDMI cable, turn on the TV and Nada! No screen.

Long story short, the only HDMI input on my lcd got fried. Did I do it? did the receiver? Any of you have experience blowing out HDMI ports? Didnt I just post on the TV thread that I love my samsung?

So I call the samsung service, the auth repair service says 500 dollars to fix because they have to replace the main board. I call samsung parts division and the board itself is 450. WTF... I can buy a new 40in 1080P for 1200 online.

So now the choice. Instead of just using the ultra convenient 3 hdmi v1.3 cables I had plugged in... I ran HDMI (for audio) and component from both cable box and my ps3, then component to TV. What a mess, 3 extra sets of Component. So annoyed...

So... Would you settle with the component video for 60 bucks or would you justify the new TV just for the HDMI image and the convenient monitor out on the receiver... Did I say I was annoyed?

Do you think the native Digital RGB signal transmitted over HDMi is really that much of an improvement over analog component... can my 4 year old samsung display the "true color, Deep color" of 1.3 hdmi anyway... these are the things I ponder as I debate clicking on the "add to cart" button while looking at my new LCD purchase online. To click or not to click

    wow..sorry man. that bites.

how did hooking everything up fry an HDMI input? Very odd. do you have any kind of warranty or extended warranty? that's it man, i'm sticking with my old tube TV and component video. never going HDMI.

I have no idea how, but it is definitely the TV's HDMI port because I plugged the cable and DVD directly into tv HDMi to trouble shoot and get blue screen no signal. I have only ever unplugged the HDMI on back of tv like 3 times due to moves.. You know what annoyes me, the HDMI connections are not very secure on anything. They just kind of hang there. I wonder if the stress/strain from weight of wire hanging, pulled down the board (it wiggles) and fried it over time...

how old is the TV? and yeah the weight could have killed it I would guess. but man, you would think they could fix it for less. check with a local TV repair shop first before giving up on it.

If the tv is 4 years old, if I am correct it is a 720P, not 1080p. If I am also correct, I believe that most tv's can receive 720p, 1080i from component video signal, but must use HDMI for 1080p. If that is correct, just use the components you have and it should work just the same for a 720 signal or upconverted dvd.

As for HDMI, they are very problematic. DVI is better-video only.

The only problem I've ever heard of with HDMI is handshake issues - and I've never experienced that myself.

Unless you have some major inteference issues and really cheap component cables, you should not see any difference between HDMI and component on your set - it's definitely not worth upgrading unless you want to upgrade and just need something convince the wife :D

My HDMI port went out on my Samsung DLP set downstairs. I went to the Shack and got an HDMI to DVI cable and connected to my tv with the DVi and an optical cable. The picture actually improved after making the switch.

i belive you can get 1080p in analog mode. that is using component or vga(rgb)
it depends on ure tv being able to support it.

if you dont see a difference then dont waste ure money right now on a new tv. that market changes like crazy.

Keep in mind if youre using Blu Ray or HD DVD players you wont get upconversion over component on some players. Also you will need HDMI when they start using that silly encryption key crap on Hi Def media. No deep color over component either. Sorry for the bad luck bro. HDMI ports are very fragile, so when plugging in take extreme care, Im sure you know that now though. Good luck, I recommend a nice new Sony XBR model in 50-60 inches or a Mitsubishi Diamond.

See my latest thread around an upconversion workaround for "Component Only" folks.
