All Channels Driven

I've searched this forum and have not found a satisfactory answer to this question. How can I tell if the power rating for my AVR is for "all channels driven?" I have a Yamaha RX-V2500 which is rated at 910 watts (130 watts x 7 channels). This is a considered a high current amp. From the users manual, it is not clear if it means all 7 channels or just 2 channels. Can someone here tell the answer or atleast point me in the right direction so that I can find it? All replies are appreciated.

I seriously doubt an receiver of any maker will put out 930 watts total. But saying that must AVR / receivers have inflated true output rating. Look at the tread "Show me your guts" and look for some amp's which are true rated output, start looking at the transformers, the filter caps needed to put that kind of wattage.

Saying that relax if your receiver have preamp outputs, enjoy it today, learn and or grow from it.

Probably something in between. You certainly won't get 130x7 with all channels driven. I found a review for the 2600 which is a 130x7 also. At 6 channels driven at 1KHZ, the output was 119wpc. With 7ch driven, your results will even be less. Here's the link, http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/receivers/1497/test-bench-for-shootout-three-mid-price-av-receivers-page3.html

    IMO, those are respectable numbers.

Thanks. I look at the review and thought that the numbers are respectable also. Not far off from the spec. at 6- channels driven. I could not find the
    "Show me your guts" thread.

Yamaha rates them with two channels driven. Here is a review, it did meet the published specs:

You know what's interesting about that review is that in 4 ohm setting, the power output at 20hz for 1ch is 199wpc as opposed to 147wpc in 8 ohm setting. This is what I would expect. But when you look at the 2ch ratings for 4 and 8 ohm, the power is less in 4 ohm (119wpc) than 8 ohm (135wpc). This is not what I would expect.

my old marantz sr4400 apparentley was capabale of driving all channels continuasley, however one day i decided to try this by splitting a stereo signal into 3 sets of them and then compensating for the loss over each chanel by adding 6db. it did drive them without clipping (to my reconing), but the sound was quite harsh. and the amp soon got verry hot.

one thing i cant understand is why the amp said power consumption was 315watts and the power output was 6x 80wrms @ 8ohm and 6x 95wrms @ 6ohm (min), that means that the out is bigger than the in , that is impossible.

Know that impedence switch in the back? That's why you leave it in the 8 ohm position.

The FTC had (still has, AFAIK) a very stringent way to report power for two channel amplifiers for home use. Car audio and multichannel formats always were and still are exempt from the letter of the law. As a consequence, there is no standard, and manufacturers can (and do) report whatever they see fit. The better manufacturers at least tell you what their standard is.

I'd doubt it. My Onkyo TX-SR702 is rated at 7*100W, yet IIRC in Sound and Vision they tested all channels driven and found it to be only 52WPC.
