Tosh HDA2 too black?

Hooked up the A2 via component and noticed really dark blacks, so dark that shadow details were lost. The problem was correctable via the brightness setting on my display. Had to go from 31 brightness to 60 to get the same level of details.

HDMI to DVI doesn't want to synch up, which is why I tried component.

    Interesting news. I'll keep this in mind as my set-up will likely be a lot like yours.

    I have mine HDMI to DVI using a BJC. Works fine.

    I'm not sure if the blackness level is due to the player or your display. I don't think I had to adjust brightness on my Westy to get a good picture, but that's just me.

    Could just be extra black via component output on the Tosh. On the TV side, its the same input I use for my Denon. The Hitachi is fantastic on shadow detail, that's how I noticed the problem right away. I think Toshiba did this on purpose so it would look 'better' to most people on most displays.

    grr....

    Looks like the spliter (DVI male to DVI female and HDMI female) I bought is bad. My STB going through the splitter had nasty static. Splitter removed and problem gone.

    Running the HD-DVD player via component for now.

    Never! That's videophile blasphemy! :)

    The A2 has "black crush". I'm guessing they did this on purpose to make it look "better" on LCD displays. Most people probably won't even notice, they'll just ooh and ahh over their 'deep blacks'.

    Just did a quick google, and I see others have noticed as well.

    For $100 though, I really can't complain to much. I would like to demo a higher up model.

    Just installed my A2 in the bedroom, very nice player and for 100 bucks its a stellar machine. Im very happy with it. I did a short demo of Batman Begins and PQ looks very good on my Sony 60" inch LCD. Im only running a 2 chan setup in bedroom using Rti4s but the sound is still very good.

    I may be applying the term 'black crush' incorrectly here since it looks like I can get the detail back (as far as I know) by raising the brightness on the display. Regardless, this could still be really annoying if I have everything coming into the DVI port, I'd have to turn the brightness down for HDTV then back up for HDDVD (unless the extra darkness is not present on the HDMI output).

    I heard the higher up Toshibas have brightness controls built into the player, which would probably put an end to my madness.

    My A-1 would crush blacks on my old TV with only a DVI input, but looked fine with component, only problem there was no upscaling for SD SVD. The weird thing was that it didn't do it before the 2.0 update, or somewhere close to the 2.0 update, and I still don't think Toshiba has a fix for HDMI to DVI black crush issue, for the first gen's anyway.

    No problems with my HDMI to DVI. My black levels are fine.
