best vacuum cleaner

You guys have any opinions. I have an old rainbow vac that i love. It was left in my house when I bought it and i have to spend a hundred bucks or so to fix it up. part of the fix was nex carbon brushes.
Well Been using it for a year and it quit yesterday after making a slight burning smell. Taking it back to the guy that fixed it to tell me whats wrong and if its the brushes going bad then he said it would be anohter 50 bucks to replace it.
I am kinda mad cause i didn't think brushes last for a year only...
should I bother with fixing this up or move on to something better.
If so what are great vacuums that u guys have experience with

We also have an Oreck that we use when we don't have time to get out the Rainbow and fill her up with water, etc. I personally don't like the Oreck as it feels light and flimsy and is waaaaay too loud. However, if the bag isn't too full, it does pick up well.

ok ok, that was harsh.
We have a Kirby, don't know a thing about them, but my mom swears it's better than than anything. I don't have any carpets other than my little 8x10 so I use the central vac.

I bought the hoover Mach5 I think for cheap from Wal-Mart and it seems to work just great. I just can't justify blowing $400 on a big yellow vacuum (Dyson). The same technology is now in other cheaper vacuums.
GF's family has a Riccard or something. Costs like $2K. Seems to be pretty nice. . .

DYSON DC-17 beats our Electrolux Oxygen Ultra by a wide margin.
It continues to pick up everything (including a fair about of dust) and does a great job.
Highly recommended. (BTW - I think the cost of the is price controlled, but you can use any storewide %off coupons to purchase them to save money. (we used a 20% off coupon for Bed Bath and Beyond....)

The main advancements with the G5, G6, Ultimate, Sentria, etc. are mostly better bag filtration, and different modes (area carpet mode) but the internals are essentially unchanged.
When I bought my G4, I really didn't want the G5 because of the maroon bag (seriously), and the others were all a pretty big jump in price. I've had mine for a little under 4 years with zero problems whatsoever except lately it's pulling a little to one side. Nothing I can't live with though.

Just FYI, the Oxygen isn't an actual Electrolux. The name is now owned by an unrelated company and used to market those vacuum cleaners. The American Electrolux maker is now called Aerus.

That would be the DC-17.

I think 2000 for a kirby is way out of my budget How much do the Dysons run??
I had a rainbow growing up, and my roommate currently has a Hyla........I just have zero interest in having to sit there and clean up a vacuum after I've used it........regardless of it's allergy benefits.........

One warning - you will be SHOCKED at how dirty things were when you get a new vacuum cleaner that actually works well. We had to empty the filter like two or three times when we first used it. It picked up more pet hair than we could have imagined.
