Interesting reading. It appears that HBR audio including dts Master is only supported through the HDMI connection, not through the analog outs. Is there a player today that will output HBR audio through its analog outs?

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

    Thanks for the link.

The 2.7 firmware update for the A2 doesn't appear to do very much. I'm gonna wait to hear others experiences before I install it.

You bet!!! I have the XA1 and have not left firmware v2.0 since every version afterwards has caused a lot of headaches for many people. Always better to let others be the guinea pig with these updates.

Installed it on my Xa2 and the SQ is much improved. I like that now my AVR can perform the decoding. 1080p/24 is also fixed, good on Toshiba for putting this one out.

Heck, I just put v2.5 on it after I got it. I think I'll sit and wait for others to chime in about it. Since I'm not using a receiver that has all the new surround formats (and I rep them!), I'm not too worried about it. Hell, I'm not really worried about my HT in general. I'd rather listen to music but an occasional movie is ok. Maybe the prices on the software will fall some during the holidays.

I guess there wont be anymore firmware upgrades for the XA1. I was hope for one for the slow bootup time. Do companies generaly stop upgrading older units, once the unit becomes 1 or 2 generations behind?

Just installed it on my HD-A2. Not sure about any PQ / SQ differences, but load times are MARKEDLY improved. Down to almost 5 seconds for SD, maybe a little longer for HD. Bootup time still about 30 seconds.

No problems with the update procedure, and no problems playing any of the half dozen or so discs I've tried since the update.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Interesting. Did you go from the 2.5 to 2.7 version?

I'm not sure what I had on there before ot be honest - I upgraded the firmware to whatever was current when I first got it, which would be late September.

OK, 'cause the reason I ask is because I recently purchased an A2 and upgraded to 2.5 from whatever version was on the unit, and I experienced the same thing. So I was wondering if version 2.7 provided an even faster improvement than 2.5, or was the increase in load speed a primarily a function of version 2.5?

Is anyone (besides me) getting an error that generates a "cannot locate outside server" (or something to that effect, I'm not at home right now) message when they are trying to load the firmware via the ethernet port? I updated my HD-A1 several times using the ethernet, but it's not working for the HD-A2. I'm using the same settings (DHCP & DNS on), but for some reason I keep getting that error. I suppose I can just create a CD, but it bothers me that it's not working the other way.

I updated my HD-A2 last night over ethernet, worked fine.

Maybe the server was down / clogged for a bit.

Also, I didn't request it, but Toshiba sent me an update CD in the mail yesterday as well. Thought that was kinda neat.

I just got a disc from Toshiba with 2.5 the other day for my HD-A2. I don't even remember ordering it and have been doing the online updates.

The updates must do something, though. My XA1 had problems playing newer HD-DVD discs out of the box until I loaded the newer firmware. . . now, no problems.

Oh, I did have a scratched up Netflix HD-DVD that basically just made my XA1 freeze. Be sure to clean discs well if they look dirty/scratched. I had to power my XA1 down by unplugging as the power button was froze, too. No biggie, but kind of a pain.

I got that same message too and ended up having to burn the ISO file to a disc and upgrade it. Maybe it doesn't like the settings coming off my router or something. I even called Belkin about it and they were quite helpful in walking thru the settings but the A2 just wouldn't "see" them. They told me to call Toshiba.

So, I'll just use the burned disc method I guess. I've only used the player maybe 3 times since I got it as I don't watch a lot of DVD movies. Mainly I listen to music or watch satellite. But, it was hard to resist the deal! :D

Don't know what to attribute it to, but the update worked just fine tonight. Boot time and load time seemed to improve and the sound quality was better. No issues so far...

I just got a toshiba hd-a2. I checked the version and I think it is ver 1.2 So I thought I would upgrade to the newest version and see if there is any difference. Well I hooked up the ethernet cable and started the download. When it starts downloading it say downloading 1/40 2/40 and so on. When it gets to 40/40 and I am assuming is almost done, it says can not find sever. Has anybody else got this error. I don't understand whats going on. I know there is nothing wrong in the connection area. It wouldn't even get to 1/40 if there was. Can anyone help?

    nikolas,
Go to the toshiba website to find the firmware that you need and download it onto your hard drive. After you burn the file to your hard drive, use this program to extract the file:

    http://www.ntfs.com/iso-burning.htm

On the left hand side of the top of the page, select isoburner.exe and it will finalize the disc.

Pop the disc in and it will ask you if you want to update. Press "YES" and after about 25 minutes, you are updated.
