Im usually the first on the block with most things but I didnt want to get too burned by buying a 1st gen HD/BR DVD player, so now the dual format Samsung BD-Up5000 is up for preorder and Im ready to take the plunge...this player does it all including built in advanced audio format decoders, so just hook up RCA outs to your pre-amp ins and you are in business! releases in Dec.

samsung_bd-up5000.jpg

I preordered at ABT for 799, dont pay the full 999 MSRP.
I think Amazon has it up for preorder too.

is there any credible review on this player, yet? I am planning of getting one, but taking a wait and see until I can test drive one.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

My guess is that the price will drop to $599 two months after release, but that bad boy sure is tempting.

Too soon. I'm sitting out for at least another year. Hopefully by the end of next year someone like Denon will be selling a true universal BluRay/HDDVD/SACD/DVD player that will be in the same price range, but much better built and have better sound quality.

I can understand that...but for people like me who are not into multi-audio formats this is a clear cut choice, besides I think HD DVD Audio discs are making their debut soon, I wonder how they will stack up vs. the older multi audio formats.

They've (DVD-A) already come and gone or do you mean that they are going to try that BS again!?!

A plastic faced Samsung is the ultimate? I wish some of the other manufacturers with a little beter build quality would jump into high def players. Until then, I'm holding off.

This seems completely unnecessary - there's only so much space audio data can fill up, I just don't think you need the storage that HD-DVD /Blu-Ray provides. A single-layer standard DVD will probably hold a full album's worth of nearly lossless multichannel music.

I'm sure someone can point to actual numbers, I'm just kind of guessing here, but it just seems to be ridiculous to think one album could go over 5GB and need 30.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I'm guessing the discs will include much more content like videos, interviews, concert footage, and other useless material, all in hi def, of course. To some consumers, this may more exciting than standard DVD or DVD-A.

For now it is the ultimate, Ive waited long enough...Im not sure its worth waiting another 6-12 months for a dvd player worth twice as much with a minute amount of picture and sound quality difference and all the same features...Plus just because it is plastic doesnt mean the build quality is bad, and you know that usually earlier generation models have a better build quality.

No plastic faced component goes in my rack, period. Earlier models usually have more bugs and issues, and I don't think the build quality goes down, unless you are looking at the cheaper models that become available over time. Like the $29 DVD playes at Walmart.

Price should be lower, you can still buy HD DVD and Blu Ray machine, movies, and still come out on top with change for icecream. Not worth it IMHO.

    Thanks for the link.
Tech specs include DTS-HD Master Lossless Audio and standard DTS 5.1 surround options. (Note also that 'Uncommon Bach' is compatible only with HD DVD players with HDMI or optical output.

I'd have to agree with you, it looks like a surround sound format only. I'd like to see what the actual specs call for. If it's anything like DVD-A, you could get anything from hi-rez to standard, which was just BS. Of course, I don't do surround sound, so I wouldn't buy any of these. Like DVD-A, I'd say it's going nowhere. SACD had the best chance to make big, but it's going to be a niche market item at best.
