increase sub gain or sub test tone on receiver?

I am hoping to safely increase the volume of my subwoofer without causing distortion. Is it better to increase the gain on the sub or test tone output on my receiver? My sub is a 50-watt sony 8 inch "monster". I'm not expecting anything incredible, but I wanted to know which is the better and safer method to get some more boom out of my sub. right now the gain is at about 12 o clock, cross over at receiver and sub is 80hz, test tone adjust ment for sub goes from -10 to 10 and is currently at 5. It sounds good to me, but i want to make sure I won't damage the woofer this way and also want to see if I can crank out a bit more bass. Thanks for your help.

Reset receiver control to -5 and leave it there; increase volume at the sub.
