My impression/review of the XBR960:
With flat panel TVs emerging nowadays such as plasmas and LCDs, most consumers are highly misinformed and believe that the quality of a flat panel is better than that of a tube (CRT) TV. This is not true at all. The image quality of a plasma or LCD TV is far worse than that of a CRT, such as the Sony KD-34XBR960. Even worse, more and more people are buying these flat panel TVs as a "status symbol" and do not understand true picture quality. Why do you think studios use CRT monitors during production and editing instead of a plasma TV? Most studios want the best, most accurate picture possible, so they use CRT monitors. The quality of the Sony KD-34XBR960 is much like a studio monitor, and surpasses all other displays regardless of cost. The dot pitch is so fine and the picture has so much realism to the point where all other displays look dull and muddy in comparison. Convergence and geometry is perfect out of the box, and the set looked fantastic. Its picture had depth and dimension, unlike the flat look of most plasma and LCD TVs. HD channels look amazing; they are very real and are not overly enhanced. The Sony's on-board processing and DRC is perfect and does not make sources look pixelated at all. The picture is fine, clear, and has exceptional detail. One caveat to remember: The set is shipped in "Vivid" mode, which is meant to grab your attention in the stores with a bright picture but lacking in clarity. It is way too bright and much too sharp. You can see outlines and picture artifacts in this mode. If you keep the TV in Vivid mode, you are guaranteed to burn the tubes in no time and shorten the life of the TV. Also, the vivid mode is very inaccurate in color reproduction. I have my set calibrated in the "Movie" mode, with a picture (white level) setting of 20/63 and a brightness (black level) setting of 30/63. Remember, it is very important to lower the "picture" setting because it controls the amount of white light on the screen. If you do this, the tube will last a very long time and you will see an exceptional image. On the other hand, the "brightness" setting controls the amount of dark areas you see in the picture. Turning this setting up will allow you to see more dark areas in a movie, but will not burn the tubes or impair image quality. An accurate image is better than a bright one. Finally, the color decoder needs adjustment as it emphasizes red severely and makes people look reddish or tanned. If you change the "color axis" setting from "Default" to "Monitor," the colors will be much more accurate and vibrant. If you adjust this set properly and take good care of it, it will produce the best picture of any TV and will last a very long time. (My old XBR TV is 16 years old and still going.) I have a neighbor who spent $10,000 on a plasma TV and the picture quality is far worse than this set. What kind of TV would you buy? Is status symbol more important than image quality?polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

I have the same set and am always amazed by the picture quality. Can't recall the settings off hand, I can post them later. I have mine set to pro mode for both component inputs (1 for games 1 for movies) with different settings for each. I also have red push turned off for both inputs.
If I had to do it again I would buy the same set. I compared my xbr960 to a 50 in sony SXRD. Black levels just weren't there for the SXRD and low quality transfers showed up poorly. Mind you the SXRD is a very impressive set, but it just can't touch this tube.
Sadly image quality is not a status symbol anymore, at least not from my experience. Big and bright seems to be what is in, or flat panels. I have a 24in sony monitor for my computer, retailed for around $2000 and has amazing picture quality. My brother saw it for the first time and said "is that an LCD?" i told him it was better, a tube...couldn't care less. My friend just got a 37in Westinghouse and he loves talking about it. I try and inform them that a good quality tube (such as my 34xbr) is easily better then a lcd. They say I don't know what I'm talking about and I'm jelous of his lcd. Very sad.

Gaara,
I am interested in your settings for the set; if possible, can you post how you have the set tweaked?
I have also compared the XBR960 to a 50" SXRD, and although the SXRD was close, it was just too big for my room and the picture quality was not nearly as good as the 34" XBR.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

Yep, I own a Sony KD-34XS955, which also uses the super-fine-pitch 34" widescreen tube. Its overall image quality is yet to be matched by any consumer digital display, IMO. Still, its hulking body and small image size (not to mention the sensitivity to nearby speakers) are hard to swallow each time I see a sexy digital display (the chassis, not the image
). The Pioneer plasmas and JVC DILAs are the only sets that have come close to get me thinking about a new set...but thus far I've preferred to spend the money on audio instead. Tannoy Dimension TD10, SOTA Star Sapphire, Heathkit W4A's, McIntosh MC2100, Eddie-Current Zana Deux, Singlepower SDS, Sennheiser HD650, Audio-Technica L3000, Sony Qualia 010 -
I have seen the XBR line of Sony CRT TVs, and they were indeed impressive. There isn't anything that I've seen that can compare to them in terms of picture quality in the world of plasma, LCD, rear-projection, LCoS, etc.
But when you consider how big and bulky they are --- that's what really turns off most consumers (at least IMHO). I was able to get my 61" rear-proj. LCD down the stairs to my basement, unpacked and set up on the TV stand by myself. It is also thin enough that it can be placed within about 18" of the back wall in my basement. The same can't be said for any of the big-screen CRTs that provide less than 1/2 the total viewing area...;)My HT

Well...
The XBR line of Sony CRT's are indeed huge, but the picture quality is absolutely unmatched by any other display type as of today.
I wouldn't want to have a plasma or LCD set where I live, because the crime rate is very high. Heard too many cases of thieves stealing these flat panel sets from houses in my area.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

For Movies:
Picture 32 Brightness 29 Color 34 Hue 0 Sharpness 22
For Games:
Picture 33 Brightness 33 Color 31 Hue 0 Sharpness 29
For both modes the set is set to Pro with color temperature neutral and clear edge off. I also have it set to monitor mode for both to turn off red push.
I have also done plenty of tweaking on the exterior (case) and the interior (service menu) of the set. My favorite tweak so far on this set was the black flok, should have done this a long time ago. You should be able to see what I am talking about in my pics.

Which adjustments did you make to the service menu? So far I've done dynamic focus, convergence, color bias, color temp, RGB gains.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

You do have to be careful in the service menu. Adjusting the wrong setting can render the set unusable!
But other than that, there are many improvements you can make to your set in the SM.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

Sony XBR CRTs are used as reference TVs in the studios. I sold both of mine (KV-32XBR450 and KV-36XBR400) when I was moving to a condo from a house. Really miss them! Amazing picture quality. One of them did go to the studio

Been a while, I did focus adjustments, overscan adjustments (not using hsiz/vsiz, using the ones independent for each scan rate), geometry adjustments, convergence adjustments, some gain adjustments...can't remember what else.
I eventually got my set ISF Calibrated, made a big difference in black levels and details in dark scenes. IMO I had the set looking pretty dam good, but it was a good improvement over what I had. -

Similar to the adjustments I did on mine.

I'll see if I can find my info i wrote down on what I changed (its been a long time), it was in a different section then HSIZ and VSIZ and all of that. I found out that these can throw off convergence, so I never touched them in my current set.
I remember the settings were much further on in the service menu. I adjusted 480i and 480p independently, 480p to look best with movies 480i to look best with games. Whatever the settings were they didn't throw off convergence. -

The adjustments I made to HSIZ and VSIZ required a complete adjustment of convergence, so I re-adjusted the convergence after doing the overscan.
But since there is a better way I'd like to know...

It was the MIDs that I adjusted to change 480i/p independently, they don't throw off convergence like HSIZ and VSIZ does.
If you would like PM me your email addy and I can send you all the docs that I found on the service menu for the XBR910/960.

Yep HomeTheaterSpot, I did a set of posts on tweaking Sonys through the service menu, I think it was a 34HS510 back then. Haven't posted there since they started requiring a membership fee, I was fine to pay by choice because I learned a lot but once it was required I moved on to Club Polk.
Just sent them, a few PDFs some excel and a few word docs from various sources. -

Hi,
I'm having a problem with the TV's internal speakers; they seem to sound distorted at all volume settings, and the sound crackles in movies with lots of bass. I've tried using a DVDP with varaible audio out to lower the volume, but the same problem exists.
Does anybody have this problem or know what may be causing it?polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves
