I have a Monitor 5 with peerless that has no low mids to woofer sound. I have swapped inputs into it with the good speaker inputs. The good passive 8 bumps real good on the good M5 but on the other M5 it does not even move. The mid has some sound coming out but it's all on the high side, no low sound. Could this be the crossover problem or mid problem. Does anyone have schematic?

Another question (not on topic) did the Peerless M5's come out with different mids and passive, 1 set traditional black framed and another silver framed????

Thanks

I interpret that the mid-bass driver doesn't have sound, correct? If so, one quick test is to push the cone in slowly and evenly to see it moves. If it doesn't,
you know you have a seized driver. If it moves, swap the driver of 2 sides (assuming only one side has problem). If the symptom remains on the same side, I will say it is the xover.

Disconnect the tweeter and then see what type of sound you get. Also some very early Monitor models had fuses for both drivers, if that applies to yours check the fuse. If you are getting no sound from the driver then it's probably seized up.

Next pull the x-over and visually inspect also make sure no connections have come loose on the driver.

Last resort swap drivers from the good side and see what happens.

Early Monitors had a cardboard insert in the rim of the basket which is a greyish/silver color. These also (not sure) may have cones that aren't "doped" with the black tacky coating we typically see in later model drivers.

Swapping the drivers of 2 sides will tell you the source of the problem.
If the symtom follows the driver, then it is the driver. If the symptom remains the same, then it is the xover side or internal wiring. Little sound from the driver sometimes can fool you because a dead driver can still echo the resonance inside cabinet.

Both my M7 and M5 are using MW6502, but none uses Peerless tweeter. I believe
MW6502 was the primary driver for the single driver speakers after the very
first generation. So, there is a good chane that MW6500 was the one for all
application in those days. My Peerless Monitor 10A's use 2xMW6500 which became MW6503 in the later model. I didn't compare, but I bet I won't able to tell much different if I put in a MW6500, MW6502, or MW6503 into my Monitor 5 :D

Engtaz, take the driver out and take a look. If it is MW6500, ebay maybe your best chance to get a single; otherwise, order a pair of whatever the replacement Polks will send you unless you want to find out whether the MW6500 does sound the same as the replacement :p BTW, the MW6500's are very fragile, they will not survive in less than ideal packing. I have 3 big magnets of model number MW6500 laying around near my tool box ;)

I take it the driver # isn't written on the back of your driver? Most are unless you can't read it or perhaps early models didn't have this feature. :)

If you cant read the driver #, my bet its the mw6500. The 6500 was used with peerless. My father's 7a's, my 7b's and my friend's 10's.

But the new 6503's from Polk would do just fine, as replacements.

    The model # (I believe ) was HL1000

There was only one model Peerless tweeter Polk used. It wasn't called Peerless by Polk (although thats who made it Peerless), Polk called it the HL1000.

Polk was also responsible for the dimple in the middle of the silk dome,. The original Peerless from Peerless, had no hole in the middle.

For M5. I have seen MW6502 and MW6500 as the drivers. I have a pair of 5B, and they are 6502, the link I included above also indicated 6502 for 5B. However, ou said that your 5B had 6500. My only explanation is that your 5B were manufactured in the transition period; hence, SL2000 and MW6500. This is not uncommon to Polk - parts didn't match the model number (e.g. my 1.2TL actually say 1.2 in the plate, but the 8 tweeters are genuine SL3000's). Another possibility is, if you buy used, then the previous owner replaced with an older driver; however, this is not likely if both are MW6500. Anyhow, I will say MW6502 is right for the 5B. For the 5A, I just don't have any evident to confirm one way or the other. Based on Jake's 7A, I will incline to say MW6500. If you do plan to buy the replacement, I suggest you to buy a pair of 6502 and put them in the 5B. Move one (or both) of the MW6500 from the 5B to the 5A and call it done. I DO NOT recommend to buy a used MW6500, they are the most fragile of all the MW650X's. The 30 years glue at the magnet just won't stand a scale 1 earthquake. Don't take the risk. You may end up spending more money!!! On the other hand, another option is to part out your 5A, you will end up with one spare MW6500 for the 5B and some money in your pocket ;)

Just buy the new 6503's from polk ....

Or look for the 6500's on ebay.

The 6502's were NOT with the peerless tweeter. The 6500 was first gen midwoofer, hence the 00, it was used with the peerless tweeter. 6502 were with the sl2000 , which you do NOT have.

I boobooed, I actual looked and another peerless M 5A. That mid had black frame with 6500 and the one bad mid had a silver frame from the other M 5A that I could not read the number.
    Break down is such:
1 pair of 5A's with peerless and black framed mids
1 single 5A with peerless and silver frame mids
1 pair of 5B's with RDO194 tweeters in place of sl2000's.

    Sorry about the confusion.
I had taken out the black framed mid from the 5A to very the number.
I was also trying to find out if the 5A and 5B used the same driver and/or if the 6503 was a direct replacement for both with out taking the driver out of the 5B's.

    Thanks

Yes same driver in most cases.

and Yes the 6503 is a direct "new" replacement.
