I'm thinking there aren't too many around now due to the impementation of HDMI...but I'd be curious to know what would be available, new or used.

What are some good players that do this?

Oppo 970HD with component upconvert hack. Do your seach on the forums here or avsforum. I have one for the past couple years, the best buck-fifty that I ever spent on a gear.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

    Thanks...Oppo is very popular.

What I'm finding though...is that component is limited to 480P in most cases...And that if I really want 720P...I have to HDMI.

    Is this true?

that's news to me, since I've installed my hack for awhile and I believed that I've been able to upconvert SD DVD to 1080i?

Oppo seems to be the best $150 upconverting player on the market. For $200 or so, you could get into a couple different Toshiba HD-DVD players which I feel are excellent upconverters that have the benefit of playing HD-DVDs.

If you are looking for very good sound and video quality, look at the PE 59avi.

google and/or wikipedia would give you the proper definition. In short, and in this context, it is a firmware that you applied to the 970 Oppo that will allow you to upconvert via component.

    read on here:

How about the Toshiba HDA2 HD DVD player, with free HDMI cable, 5 free HD DVD's mail-in offer, and free shipping, for only $199?

You need to register at HomeTheaterForum.com first and leave your username in the comments section, and only 200 hundred are available total so they will go very, very fast!

The 2900 doesn't upconvert. I don't believe the 59avi or the Sony upconvert over component as autopilot asked for, not sure if the HDA2 does.

Autopilot, another one that will upconvert over component is the Zenith DVB318 with older firmware. Teere is also a Samsung that did as well, can't remember the model...maybe the 841?

Yeah...I saw that Zenith model...I guess I'm late to the party. Not many models upconvert over component...And from what I've read the results are mixed.

Anyone notice a significant improvement with the Oppo via component from 480p to say 720p/1080i upconverted? The more I read, the more I think that I need to still wait to buy a proper HD DVD player.

My old Tosh upconverted via comp. My LG upconverts via comp only if the material is not copy protected. If it is it bumps it down to 480P.

Just because the player upconverts, doesn't mean it will look any better than what the tv already does...

Yeah...I noticed a slight loss in color fill, and clarity of image when I switched from HDMI upconverted to component...What I gained was a more cinema like, softer image???? I probably just need to adjust my image controls to get the colors to pop out more.

exactly. you can't add pixels to an image.. if it's a standard dvd at 480, upconverting it, isn't going to suddenly make it look like 720, 1080i OR P. you can't add to what isn't there.

like if a car tops out at 105 mph, then you hear that by adding this additive it'll suddenly make the car go 125mph, well, that is snake oil. IMHO ;)

Id like to third what Danger Boy and krabby report.

Standard DVDs are mastered in 480p. My understanding is that "upconversion" simply allows the use of DVI/HDMI connections. I've read accounts that upconverting contributed to a loss of image quality. I can't really speak to that, but would stress that the image can't get any better, regardless of "upconversion", than the image resolution native to the disc.

my older oppo 971 utilizes a faroudja (sp) processor to smooth out jaggies. then outputs it via dvi to my tv @ 1080i. and it does that very well. just got me a toshiba hd-a2 hd dvd player so hopefully it up-converts just as well if not better. then the only reason to keep my oppo is for it's flexibility. (does ntsc/pal and region-free. the toshiba does neither, at the moment.)
