I bought Queen's a Night at the Opera on dvd audio and was
blown away. I don't have a dvd audio player but I was able to
play the DTS 5:1 layer and it's fantastic. I heard vocals and
instruments I had never heard before and the surround
production was fantastic IMO. Bohemian Rhapsody and the
Prophet song were incredible. There is also a remastered
stereo layer that blows away the original cd. I can only
imagine how great the dvd audio layer is. I know a lot of
people are not fans of 5:1 music but this dvd gives you the
best of both worlds. I was switching back and forth between
stereo and 5:1 and some songs sounded better in stereo
while others were far better in 5:1. I plan on buying Pet Sounds
and Dark side of the moon when they come out in February and
March. Anyone have any other dvd audios to recommend?
Thanks, Mike

    Linkin Park - Reanamation
I also use 5.1 DD with DVDA. The Linkin Park is the best sounding on the market right now. I am amazed every time I hear it.

scottvamp, is the Linkin Park - Reanimation DVD-a a disc where other people sing Linkin Park songs? I am teetering back and forth on this one. I actually had it in my hands at Best Buy, but decided not to buy it. I'm not a huge fan of Linkin Park, but I am trying out as many different DVD-a discs i can get my hands on.

mhw58, glad you like Queen a night at the opera. it' does sound wonderful in DVD-audio. there are a few other good ones out there too. Check out Fleetwood Mac - Rumours, Eric Clapton with BB King - Riding with the King, Crowded House, BareNaked Ladies - Maroon, and a few others I can't think of right off the top of my head. since i'm at WORK!

I've heard that the prices should be dropping this year for DVD-audio. Yeah!!

    danger boy,
Thanks for the info. I'm a big Fleetwood Mac fan so Rumours is
high on my list. I also like all the others you mentioned. I don't
live near a Best Buy, how much do they sell dvd audios for?
Do you have a dvd audio player? If you do, what make is it?
    Thanks, Mike

The best prices I have found on DVD-A discs are at CC online. Most discs are $13.99. They have a pretty decent selection. If Best But sales them online then they need to redesign their website b/c I sure couldn't find any there although I have seen them at the stores for $19.99 -$23.99.

    Mike,

Yes I do have a DVD-audio player.. it's a Toshiba SD4700, I think it was recently replaced with the SD4800 or similar number. It's a good little player.. not expensive at all. Works as a real good DVD/CD player too. Best Buy is pricey... as Steve said.. they run about $19 - $24.99. My local CC does not carry DVD-audio. Strange but true. I went with DVD-a over SACD because of the DD or DTS sound tracks can be played in any DVD player.. not the case with SACD.

You can find a Toshiba SD4700 for about $140 on Ebay. If you get one... make sure your receiver has 6 analog RCA inputs. To get true DVD-audio from a DVD-a player, it must use these. A digital cable will not give you the high resolution of DVD-audio without those 6 RCA cables. Good luck and have fun. It's a kick.

    danger boy,
Thanks for the info. I'm pretty stunned
with the sound of DTS 5:1 so dvd audio
must be amazing. I have SDA's as my front and rear speakers and love them.
What's your opinion on combo players
that play SACD and dvd audio? I know
Onkyo makes a combo player that plays both. I bought the Stones 40 Licks SACD but can only appreciate
the stereo format on it. I would think
that dvd audio will win out since Sony
is hording SACD like it did with BETA.
It's rumored that the Beatles catalog
will come out on dvd-audio in the next
    year or so.

Mike, I have not heard much SACD, no one i know has it yet. I would think the combo players would be great.. since that would give you the choice of either format. What you may not find on DVD-a, you might on SACD. I think you are correct.. we all know that VHS won over Beta years ago. Sony, hopefully will learn from that.
Who knows which format will succeed and which one won't. It's still way to early to tell. If both formats don't get on the ball though.. they may both go bye bye. I sure hope not. I think multichannel audio has to much yet to gain. We're only scratching the surface on how far it can go.

Why can you only listen to the stereo format on the Stones 40 Licks SACD?

I'm sure everthing sounds great with those SDA's :D

I've also found that there are some DTS discs out there that are not true DVD-audio. I have a few of those.. and the sound is nowhere near what DVD-audio is. One of them is Venu and Mars by Paul McCartney and Wings. IT is DTS not DVD-audio. the sound is bad when compared to other ones out there I've listened to.

Bought Night at the Opera because it comes in DTS, too, & I don't have DVD-A. Just wanted to see what it was like. Am not, may never be, a fan of surround mixes, but the 2-ch sounds great. However, I have one complaint, the kind of complaint that only a person who identified with the Bohemian Rhapsody scene in Wayne's World would make. The very last "any way the wind blows" seems mixed too soft. I seem to remember it being a little louder. It's sort of like leaving off the cherry on a Sundae, or only putting half of one. Sure, the Sundae is good, but the cherry is sort of the thing that completes it, even if it's not a make or break component. This post may compete for the most trivial complaint of the yr award.:p

Yeah some DVD-a mixes are just so so.. and they don't do the music any justice. Just because a track is mixed in 5.1 DVD-a doesn't mean it will sound better than a stereo mix. I like DVD-a. but agree that not all of it sounds good. There is an Elvis 30 DVD-a disc out. What they hell is Elvis going to sound like in 5.1 surround? Awful I would think.

I guess what i like DVD-a more than anything is for the increased clarity you can't get from a CD. The limits of CD's are reached. Not much more can be done with that format anymore to bring out more clarity... hence multichannel audio was born. Multichannel can pack more punch onto a disc that is the same size.. although not the same format.

I think it depends on how the recording was done originally.
The Beatles A hard Days night dvd was touted as being
5:1 but it really isn't. Early Beatles recordings were mono
and you can't make 5:1 out of mono. I would think most of
Elvis's recordings were mono also. Stuff like Dark Side of
the Moon should be fantastic in 5:1. I haven't had the chance
to really crank Queen's A night at the opera but I'll listen for
the softer 'any way the wind blows'. I can't imagine why they
would soften it but I have read other complaints about different
    mixes on dvd-a's.
SACD'd require an SACD player to play the surround format,
they don't have a dts layer like dvd-a's.
