Im looking for a set of headphones to use primarily on the pc at work (streaming music) or mp3 players when traveling. Was hoping to not spend over 50.00 bucks.

Stopped in rat shack to check a few out....I pair for about 49 bucks damn near made my ears bleed. Another for 69 was a little (called koss i think).

Would any of you experienced headphone guys recommend buying used?

I have no problem with buying used... ask people in here.. that's where a few of us have bought some good ones recently.. including moi. I am very happy with them too.

The ones I bought from a fellow Polkie were more than your budget, but that doesn't mean that other good deals can't be had in here though.

    good luck. and ask around.

Go to Headfi.org and ask them. I've been a member there for 4 years. It's an incredible forum!

    Good luck.

If you post there, inlcude your music taste, everywhere you plan on using them, if the sound can leak out or not (open or closed), your preference of over the ear, in ear etc.....

Have fun and sorry about your wallet!

For $50 bucks you're not gonna get close to anything magical-sounding, even used. I'm a big fan of buying high-end headphones (> $300) used, but I'd recommend buying new at lower price points since the savings aren't that great and hygiene/mechanical durability can be more of an issue...

At under $50 bucks the Koss Porta-Pro are hard to fault. They sound pretty damn good, even (as long as you plug them into something halfway decent). Incredibly smooth, linear, decent extension - not stuff you usually find at that price point. Seriously, the Porta-Pro comes closer to the "high end" headphone sound than any other under-$150 headphone I've heard...and I've used just about every headphone from a couple hundred bucks to a few thousand bucks. If you don't mind a sport clip, the Koss KSC-75 are supposedly an incredible bargain, though I've not tried them myself.

Make sure to get closed-style headphones if you'll be using them for travel or in any public places. Open style offer great sound quality, but they let in and give off A LOT of sound. So, it will be noisy music for you, and annoying for people close to you.

I have really enjoyed these for $40. I bought them for my ipod and for work since I can't stand iem's, and haven't regretted it. Although, like Andy mentioned, they do share sound with my neighbors...

Yeah, too bad - the HD555 is an excellent headphone for that price; great deal. I had the 555 for a short time a while back and I'd almost forgotten about it.

I have a pair of Takstar force feedback phones and love them for my mp3 player. I don't think they make them anymore but these look like the same thing. They are standard size over the ear though. http://www.dansdata.com/rfxphones.htm

The classic headfi greeting, and so true.
I am also a headfi member. Went there to research headphones for my iPod, and wound up with a pair of Sony MDR-CD300's and
a EarMax Pro glass amp to push them. Maybe someday I'll dust them off and get them hooked back up.
