This might be the mother of all stupid questions, but here goes. Would the use of say a Monitor 5 (or 5jr) as a center channel speaker make any sense? ---assuming it could be somewhat centered between the fronts. If not, how important do you guys consider the quality of the center channel in 5.1. I have about a $200 JBL that I use, which sits on the floor. (sorry if this is slightly off vintage topic...but close). Mike

I think the importance of a center channel in a HT room is as or more than the mains. Most vocal and action ( most of the movie) comes from the center channel. A good quality center speaker will (IMO) make all the difference in the world to a HT system. Thats one speaker I would not skimp out on.
    Monitor 7b's front
    Monitor 4's surround
Frankinpolk Center (2 mw6503's with peerless tweeter)
    M10's back surround

    Tempest-X 15" DIY sub w/ Rythmik 350A plate amp
Dayton 12" DVC w/ Rythmik 350a plate amp
    Harman/Kardon AVR-635
    Oppo 981hd
    Denon upconvert DVD player
    Jennings Research (vintage and rare)
    Mit RPTV WS-55513

I use a pair of Monitor 5's for center channel. I used to use a CS2. It is like night and day as far a quality. Most of HT comes throught the center channel. My front's are srs3.1's.

Engtaz: how do you connect the pair if there is a single speaker center output on the HTR? Do you use speaker selector or hook them in series/parallel? Mike

I've been using a 5Jr as a center channel almost since the days before center channels. Around 1991 I had the SDA 2B's with the SL 2000 tweeters and wanted to timbre match. Solution a 5JR with the same tweeter. Problem was it wasn't magnetically shielded. The high fi shop I bought my stuff from somehow affixed a magnet to the back of the 6.5 inch driver which offset the magnetic effects. Its worked great everysince. I agree the center channel is a critical component as it does so much work.

    Polk SDA2B
    Polk 5Jr Center
    Polk Monitor 4.6 Rears
    Yamaha RXV-3000

    2 Channel
JBL 325A (Soon to be monitor 12's)
    Onkyo TXSV-Pro70

I was coveting your screen as I looked at the gaudy frame around the TV. And your projector. (and your Outlaws, unless they are too much like in-laws).

I'm using a 5jr as my center channel between two 7's.
Before I got the 5jr I was using a different brand of speaker.
After the swap there was a significant difference/improvement.

"I was coveting your screen as I looked at the gaudy frame around the TV." or you just talking about the screen itself.

I have no pics anywhere of my equipment/:confused::confused::confused:

oops...I meant as I looked at the frame around MY big screen TV shown in the polkenstein post....I would prefer a screen and projector...maybe after the next big settles... I can be even more confusing in person.

For you guys using 5s or some other smaller monitor for centers, how do you place them? I assume standing upright? For me, this means in front of the equipment. The sound was very good...but the appearance sucks.

Mine is on top of a low wide cabinet that houses my equipment and is sitting underneath the tv that's mounted on the wall.
