I curse whoever thought up this damn polyswitch

nonsense on sda's (1-Bs in my case)

I thought this was going to be an easier job - that the crossover would come out the passive radiator hole and one could put it on a workbench to solder in the replacement polyswitch.

Nooo, the damn binding post mount has to come off the back and the crossover pass out that way, where it only comes out 4-6 inches due to all the wires soldered onto it.

So now I have to find a stool to place it on , and solder two spots sideways, while kneeling down in the garage. ugh. I am not the best solderman and my eyes suck.

This is a rediculous design. Why did they not use a fuse mounted into the lower outside cabinet like NORMAL designers? damn it. Can't do it now need daylight.

I don't know of many externally fused speaker designs in todays speakers. Magnepan uses them, off hand, but most monkey coffins I've seen are sans fuses.

It was for protection as the moron ratio is high, and they "reset". I think it's kinda smart.

You might find that project easier if you removed the drivers first. Depending on the actual year, they may have crimps on the drivers instead of solder. That would allow you to remove the whole Xover assembly w/ wires. I would just remove the drivers, mark them and cut the wires as long as I had a schematic as a soft reference.

    Thanks for the thoughts.
I have no idea what modern designers are doing but I think my early 90s Paradigms had fuses.
The Advent Heritage Towers I am using now also have fuses.

There seems to be a lot of insulation in the body of the cabinets that would make extracting wires from 4 mid/bass and 2 tweets quite a chore also.

From what I read the 1c is an easier job since wires from the drivers are harnessed and snap into the crossover rather than being soldered.
No consolation to a 1B owner though...

The insulation is usually not as intimidating as it may seem, as it's usually a single panel, just folded in half. The real vintage series had some "explosive" filling that was friendly to everything with an edge.

You need to break out some tools and get busy. You've gone this far, and plan on some kind of upgrade, why not learn something about your speakers?

You may find something new for all of us here, you know? Consider yourself a CP guinea pig....now you have purpose :)

Are you kiddin' me? There is nothing I would find that the old timers here do not know ! They have answered many of my queries in the past. I'm just venting.

Not planning on swapping any caps or resistors etc...
or the drivers have to come out. Just need to do the polys so I can jam Stevie Ray loud and enjoy the dynamic punch of Beethoven, Mozart, etc...finales at 200 watts.

As much weed as they "allegedly" smoked in the old days, you just never know what your going to find in a vintage Polk.
