Wrong box volume , please help !!

I just got 2 DX 12's (4 Ohm), and i built my own box. This is my first time building a box and i must say i did a rather bad job, my volume for the box came out to be about 2.2 cu ft. When i hooked them up they didnt sound very good, they only sounded good when i was playing loud deep bass. is there anyway i can save my box? or any good tips and tricks for building a new one?? please help!! thanks!
