Amp needed for SR124DVC

So I know the C500.1 would be best but is 400w going to be enough? I'm thinking of getting another C400.4 and bridging each set to the VC's. I only say this because I can get a great deal on another 400 and no access to any 500's soon. I also have a chance to pick up an Xtant 3.1 300w amp. Is this going to be enough to get the sub going? I'm going to run a small sealed for sound quality and am not really looking for maximum output but I want it to kick me in the chest a bit when I want. I know I need more but how much misjustice am I doing this sub?

Home Setup: Sony VPL-VW85 Projo, 92" Stewart Firehawk, Pioneer Elite SC-65, PS3, RTi12 fronts, CSi5, FXi6 rears, RTi6 surround backs, RTi4 height, MFW-15 Subwoofer.

Car Setup: OEM Radio, RF 360.2v2, Polk SR6500 quad amped off 4 Xtant 1.1 100w mono amps, Xtant 6.1 to run an eD 13av.2, all Stinger wiring and Raammat deadener.

I definitely wouldnt go with the 3.1. While Im a huge Xtant fan, thats just not enough grunt to get the most out of that sub.

Id also be leary of the 400.4 too. 400 watts would be ok for that sub but Id still rather have a little more. Plus Im not a big fan of bridging a 4 channel amp to a DVC sub. Too easy to get things wrong with independant channels with independant gains trying to run the same speaker.

Id say save up a little more and get the 500.1. It may take a little longer and more money but I guarantee you down the road youll be glad you did.

I was thinking the same thing but seeing I'm not all that familiar with the new line of Polk (as I don't sell mobile anymore and am strictly home A/V)... I needed more suggestions from others.

Well I'm the proud new father of a matched pair of SR124DVC's. They're beautiful.

I'm still up in the air about the amp situation though. I have two subs which I'm not sure if I wanna run one or both. I just got a deal I couldn't pass up so I got the pair. A buddy has a Rockford T8004 that he'll basically give me (that cheap), another buddy has access to some older but barely used Alpine amps (MRV-1507 and an Expert series T407)... what to do what to do...

I would use the 300.2 myself...

You can use one , or get one for each if you run both subs...

Mac, and Cody are the experts on this kinda thing though...

    IMHO , of course..

a 500.1 is my choice with my sub, but I am considering using the two extra 300.2`s that I have on the sidelines

The 300.2 would underpower those subs. Get something close to the power ratings for these subs. I would personally get something that is putting out over 700 watts RMS per sub.

i run a massive audio p-1500 on my sr-124dvc pair. 1250 watts @ 12v rms and 1500watts @14.4v max. they handle that with no problem. you want to power these subs especially in a sealed box. at least 600 watts a sub if you can afford to do so. anything less and they wont live up to their potential, they love power and sound great!!!

So now the question is, as I have access to JL at a discount, is the 500/1 going to be strong enough for a single 12 or do I really need to go balls out and get the 1000/1? If I don't have to spend the extra bucks, I'd rather not but I want to make sure I'm feeding it enough juice.

Since the 500/1 makes over 600 watts, it would work fine with a SR124. BUT if you can swing the 1000/1, that would be a better option.

Its kinda like saying I can get a BMW 3 series but do I really need to get the 5? No, you dont really need it. Then again you dont really need a 3 either. A 1971 Ford Pinto would get you back and forth to work just as well. ;)

If you can afford the 1000/1, get it. If you cant, the 500/1 will work well too and sound great. Just not quite as well as the 1000/1. Frustrating aint it?! :D

    Might I suggest:

    http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=2461
Alpine MRD-M605 - Alpine Mono 600 Watt Amplifier

    or

    http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=2462
Alpine MRD-M1005 - Alpine Mono 1000 Watt Amplifier

At these prices, the dollar/watt ratio is much better than what they originally sold for. I have the MRD-M605 now (and am thinking about stepping up to the 1005), and can attest the quality/reliability is there.

There are a boatload of other sub amps out there that offer similar (or higher) power output for similar $$, but I've had a couple different generations of the Alpine V12s and have really liked them.

Id go with the 1000/1 myself. Always better to have a good amount of headroom. No doubt Id go with JL over Alpine if i could get discounts on the JL stuff. I might even be running some w7s next year:eek:

I wouldn't knock the JL product...quality is definitely there, but the "hookup" isn't there for all potential users. The 1000/1 would probably tax the charging system more than the Alpine- the RIPS power supply can really suck it back, especially with key-off listening. All of that said, I'd rather have a 1000/1 and do some "Big 3" and battery improvements to make the most of it, but I'm not really able to justify retail pricing to do so.

but then I wonder if I'd need a bigger alt to go the 1000... totally spaced out that portion of it. I need to see what my new civic has stock. Either way, I'm putting in an inquiry on prices.

I think youll be fine with the big 3 upgrade and a kinetik 1400 under the hood.

Like I said, if youre able to get a discount on JL products, Id go for it. They keep their resale value really good because they have a lot of the market conned into thinking they are Gods gift to car audio, and a lot of people want it but cant afford it. So when they get a chance to jump on used equipment, they do it in a heart beat.

If youre just going to be listening to music at musical levels, your stock charging system will be fine.

If youre going to be blasting rap all over the neigborhood then youll need an upgrade.

There are dudes all over the place in competition running WAY over 1500 watts and all are using stock alternator and battery. Not saying you shouldnt upgrade the charging system, just that you wont have to.

    Yup. Itll work.

However there is nothing wrong with getting a bigger battery. I plan on getting either an Optima or Kinetic for mine eventually. But I do a lot of listening/tuning with the engine off so the battery is the only thing running mine.

Then again, I may just get a Duralast Gold from Autozone. Half the price and the same numbers (except for the Kinetic which is 1400 CCA!!!)

Well, after a long time coming... I found my amp. Since I will have 4, yes 4, Xtant 1.1 100w mono's to quad-amp my SR components, I will not also have an Xtant X1001 amp to run a single SR 12 DVC. Dear god... what have I gotten myself into???

Now all I need is some more deadening material and all my wires and this project will be a go. Man this is going to be crazy!!

You can pic up a kinetic pretty cheap on the dreaded EBay. For your civic I would chose the HC1400. It will run you around 180 shipped
